Nazareth

The Scottish hard rock quartet Nazareth had a handful of hard rock hits in the late '70s, including the proto-power ballad "Love Hurts." Formed in 1968, the band featured vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet. The band had relocated to London by 1970, and they released their self-titled debut album in 1971. Both Nazareth and 1972's Exercises received favorable attention by British hard rockers, but it was 1973's Razamanaz that moved them into the U.K. Top Ten (both "Broken Down Angel" and "Bad Bad Boy" were hit singles). Loud 'n' Proud and Rampant (both 1974) followed the same formula, yet were slightly less successful.

Released the following year, Hair of the Dog established Nazareth as an internationally popular hard rock band. Featuring their revamped version of the Everly Brothers' "Love Hurts," the album sold over a million copies in the U.S. Until the end of the '70s, the band continued successfully as a quartet, releasing a series of Top 100 albums. In 1979, they added former Sensational Alex Harvey Band guitarist Zal Cleminson to their lineup; he left after recording two albums -- 1979's No Mean City and 1980's Malice in Wonderland -- and was replaced by former Spirit keyboardist John Locke. Following the 1981 live album 'Snaz, guitarist Bill Rankin also joined the group; Locke left soon after his addition and Rankin switched to keyboards.

By this time, their commercial appeal had dwindled across both the U.K. and the U.S. By the mid-'80s, Nazareth was left without a record contract, so the band was put on hiatus for a few years. They returned in 1992 with No Jive, which failed to gain an audience in America and Europe. In 1999, Nazareth resurfaced yet again with Boogaloo. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

agree with phil_bib22, this biography is far from the fact.

Hair of the Dog was my first hard rock album in '75 and it still holds up. Timeless
this biography is bullshit. way to reduce a powerful and influential blues metal band into an insignifican t footnote. forget that they were one of the main stylistic influences on g'n'r, to my mind they were real down to earth heavy southern blues rock-even if they were from scotland. i don't care if i inspire outrage, but i think they represent that genre a hell of alot better than those pretentious f**king prancing pansies aerosmith.
wwtp18
they have over 30 albums I have them all but evidently Pandora only knows of Hair of the Dog

The live album "snaz" is awsome
I personally loved both No Mean City and 2XS especially May the Sun Shine Bright and You Love Another and Back to The Trenches. I was in 6th grade when Hair of the Dog came out. Alot of memories associated with those songs including the first time I got stoned.

Saw them three times in the late 70's and early 80's. Would have been more if I hadn't been in Japan in the early 70's. Great live band. Exercises and Close Enough for Rock'N'Roll never got the credit they deserved. Great albums.
bucksboogie
They played at the Pallumwood House outside of Buffalo, NY with Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep and Blue Oyster Cult for 10 BUCKS¡ Saw them all before, especially BOC (30 times or more by then). Not only was it a great show, but I met my wife there. Talk about your common interests. Now that great concert venue is the Meyer Bros. water and juice factory and I've never gotten to see any of those bands again for $2.50 apiece with the exception of a couple of free concerts.
This Flight Tonight ROCKS!!!!!

Yeah, a lot of fun when I was in the Army in Germany. A great band by any measure. They could rock and pretty much had the first real power ballad. Great stuff. They were good live, too.
Truly great live. My favorite album is Malice in Wonderland though, and they don't even list it. It's even better than Hair of the Dog, which is amazing.
just love "love hurts, and this flight tonight" they are awesome
true rockers, i saw the latest rendition w/ manny charlton on guitar at a bike week event in daytoa beach.last night. they freakin rocked.
