The longtime guitarist for arena rockers Journey, Neal Schon was born February 27, 1954 in San Mateo, CA; a child prodigy, he joined Santana at age 17, making his debut on 1971's III LP. In 1973 Schon co-founded Journey with fellow Santana alum Gregg Rolie; although the group's early records favored a largely instrumental, progressive rock-influenced approach, with the 1978 addition of frontman Steve Perry their commercial fortunes ascended as slick hard rock hits like "Wheel in the Sky," "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'," and "Anyway You Want It" became FM radio staples. In 1981, Schon teamed with keyboardist Jan Hammer for the fusion-inspired Untold Passion; that same year, Journey achieved mega-stardom with the release of the chart-topping Escape, which yielded the Top Ten hits "Who's Crying Now," "Open Arms," and "Don't Stop Believin'." A second collaboration with Hammer, Here to Stay, followed in 1983, with Schon soon rejoining Journey for the smash Frontiers; however, despite the success of 1986's Raised on Radio, he left the band in 1989, recording the solo effort Late Nite before forming the supergroup Bad English with singer John Waite. After two LPs, Bad English imploded, and in late 1993, he joined the reformed Journey, issuing the acoustic solo outing Beyond the Thunder two years later. The two-disc Electric World followed in 1997, and in 1999 Schon returned with Piranha Blues. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
Neal also played with Hagar in 80's. He never left Journey. Journey took a break or went on hiatus after Raised on Radio. The band then came back with the Escape lineup for their Trial By Fire album. He IS Journey, founding member. Have seen him (Journey) three times and was blown away every time. He is an unbelievably talented guitarist.
I saw this guy in the Super Bowl of Rock Game #3 in the summer of 1977 at Soldiers Field in Chicago Illlinois.when i was 13. he rocked all 80,000 of us .I will never forget this. they were the second of five bands to play . the line up was 38 special ,Journey, REO Speedwagon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Ted Nugent. only $12.00 . Nine hours of rock. anyone who attended this show remembers the plastic milk jugs. it looked like a giant Popcorn machine.
This guy plays Santana just like Carlos. What a treat watching him mimick him at the Fillmore when he was really a kid. A true master of the instrument.
Shihan It Simply couild not have been put any BETTER.. your are SOO right on about Mr Schon. I loved him in Journey Santan and Bad English, now he still gives me chille's to hear his AWESOME riffs licks and hits on the Guitar.. I wish I was his personal guitar so he could play me like that.. ☺
Schon is one of the most under-rated rock guitarists in history. His chops are as good as some of the biggest names in the genre, which he doesn't get credit for. He can shred like Van Halen and play emotionally like Shawn Lane. As far as chops alone, he is 50 times better than Carlos Santana.
I emailed Pandora about Hardline. The response I got was that Pandora is always adding music to their library and they would look into it. BTW, Schon's "Late Night" is one of my favorite solo releases from ANY guitar player including Satriani, Vai, Gilbert, or Petrucci.

Thanks for saying it Todd J, no Hardline. Unbelievable.
I generally love Schon's - saw him solo in Petaluma a numnber of years ago. Maybe it's just me, but this DVD sounds like elevator music. What's up? Love what his son Miles is doing musically - he definitely inherited the genes!! Great to hear from a new generation...
@Ranlau... Neal Schon is a wonderful guitarist. But I have to agree that Chiquico really is tight..I did see him live and WOW!! also if you have time Chieli Minucci is in this mix. Chieli co-founder of Special FX. All and all not bad for Pandora to play such artists and its free.
No mention of Hardline anywhere. Pandora doesn't even have it in their artist list...And I respect all the other guitarists listed below, but I'll take John Petrucci over ANY of them...

Haven't you ever heard of Schon & Hammer?????? It doesn' say Hammer was in Journey.
Response to Jeff Alvarez below: YES, Mr. Schon is definitely one of the greats and can go toe to toe with Mr. Santana. BUT there is only one Carlos Santana! Carlos is THE most ditinctive and emotional electric guitar player on the planet! My two cents...
I was lucky to see Neil in the Winterland days of the 60's & &70's. I can honestly say this guy can go toe to toe with Carlos, and at times do Carlos better than Carlos!
No mention of the album he made called HSAS Hager Schon Aaronson Shrieve I saw them perform at the Old San Jose Civic. Great Show too badd they did not stay together. As history shows, Sammy went on to Van Hagar fame. I loved the albums he made with Jan Hammer as well.
Always loved Neal and Greg, but not Steve! I saw him about 1994 in Santa Cruz at Palookavilles with Greg and other former Santana percussionists playing as a band called Abraxas. Awesome talent!
