Oh, to go back to those innocent days, before the needle and the damage done.

Funny how you feel when your finding out its real
Best NY line
Supposedly Joni Mitchell wrote Circle Game in response to this.
You don't have to live on Sugar Mountain or be young of be setting off on your journey through life to feel the beauty and magic of this song. Long may you run Neil Young.
@sales66622: It's about leaving your childhood behind and not being ready yet... but knowing that you're supposed to be ready and that you have to leave it. I remember hearing this song and realizing that I was at that point in my life. It really moved me, cried my eyes out. You just know that things will never be the same again.
I guess Bill Monroe did write it after all.
This song makes me get teary, I guess it's because when I was little my parents would take us to the fair but my dad would say that we didn't have the money to go on any of the rides or to even buy a soda. We just stood watching others have fun. I didn't get to have that experience until I was in my early teens and the guy my mom was dating took me and my sister to fun places. Sugar Mountain not always happy but I love the song.
I love it but what is this song really about??
Hello everyone upthere
Love it alot..

Dont be a heel get realandfeel Neil
My absolutely favorite concert memory: 1972, Dane County Coliseum, Neil Young performing solo - and Sugar Mountain was the highlight. Didn't want it to end . . .
Neil
Run scout run..
It's so noisy at the fair, but all your friends are there
What a great great song. Innocent and it makes me enjoy seeing the world again through the eyes of my seven year old. Peace.

Bring back high school memories...
to "youcallTHAT m u s i c ' : why try to like it? either you do or you don't. just realize that some people do like it and learn to live with it.
rstarkey77
to 'you call that music''s question, kinda hard to explain, but there's an innocence to this song, if you feel it, like you're a little kid again, and it's summer, and the bees are buzzing and the grass is between your toes, and there's an ice cream bar that melting onto your fingers, and there's a kiddie pool that your dog keeps getting into when he shouldn't, and you can smell the cotton candy that the barker is selling (in the song)...it just takes you there...if you let it

I live on Sugar Mountain Maggie Valley NC
This is probably my favorite Neil Young song ! He has a lot of great ones .
Every time I hear it, I try extra hard to like it. I try.

Explain why this is considered a good song to some people?
Always liked it. Timeless.
oh the difference between hearing this song when you're twenty and then when you're 54....We can still live on Sugar Mountain Neil...
I did leave too soon. I agree with Jason Mitchell.

fabulous
Moves me. Pure poignant bittersweet beuaty that tears me up if I listen to the lyrics too closely. I first heard it when I was about 20, and oh man...he knew, and I knew he knew.
Love this song. Such a heart-tuggin g message of growing up. Lets all keep living on Sugar Mountain! Ahem... make that Sugar-free Mountain if it were up to me.
I love this song!
It's astonishing to believe that Neil Young wrote this song at just twenty years old...it shows how truly talented this man is. I can remember when my dad first showed me this song, and how quickly I was affected by it. It helps me realize that my childhood and time on Sugar Mountain won't last forever, and I'll feel like I'm "leaving there too soon," which makes me try to live my life to its absolute fullest. All in all, a great song.
Those days back in the 70's I can see it so clear, a few of us would light a lil dobbie kick back and listen to Neil - oh sugar mountain! Back when music was music from a vinyl lp that came with a poster.

Amazing song...I can still picture being a little kid and listening to this song on my parents LP. The lyrics still choke me up. A great take on childhood and the loss of innocence.

how about Circle Game as a song similar? Joni wrote it for Neil; Neil dedicated Sugar Mtn. to Joni.
Wow, it's unusual to see so many comments for a single song from any artist, but no wonder. I guess I am really not alone. This is one of my favorite NY songs.

One of the most emotionally evocative songs ever. I can still see in my mind the dorm room I was sitting in and the boy who introduced me to this song, like it was a sweet home movie. I love to think about Neil thinking about these songs, today. He's such a gift!
Okay, these are, like, the best lyrics.
Great early Neil. It doesn't need more than this… drums and bass are cool… but when it comes down to it… this is just a two-track reel-to-reel analog recorder with a couple mics - if that. All Neil and the room he was in. That… my dears… is American Poetry - inspired ala-Dylan (our modern day Shakespeare by the way etc…) Anyway :) Nick Drake & Elliott Smith held their ground & influence to recordings like this.
This song affects me. It, along with many of Neil's other acoustic songs, makes me want to just pick up my guitar and play all night long.
this song is so awesome! it just brings back so many memories of my parents listening to neil young and crazyhorse. i was really happy to find it on pandora. i love it!
