Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish was formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trained opera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal-band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vänskä, and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish label Spinefarm, which released their debut album Angels Fall First in late 1997 (it appeared in the rest of Europe the following year). The follow-up, Oceanborn, appeared in late 1998 and made Nightwish a bonafide mainstream success in their homeland; the album reached the Finnish Top Five and spun off three Top Ten singles. The band toured Europe heavily, consolidating their success, and in 2000 recorded their third album Wishmaster. Not only did it top the Finnish charts, but it also became the group's first album to be released in the U.S. (by Century Media, which reissued their previous albums in 2001 as well). ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
Wow... I wish I could get a ticket to that as well, it'd be amazing! That, and if Kamelot would ever play over here. I know they did a few times, but they have to again!
When I think of Nightwish, I think of the first time I saw them in their video for Wish I had An Angel, with Tarja singing, and then the camera cutting to Sabertoo---err Sami, wailing on his guitar
OMG, nightwish the band is playing here in portland, oregon on oct 2

Okay, I will agree with the others that are saying that Tuomas is the heart of Nightwish, because he is. But I will also and always side with those that say that Tarja has Annette beat in vocals, Tarja's voice is much richer and there is something about the way that she sings that is captivating and adds to the song.

@ Ottensonandrew - No, it's not. Kinslayer is a song about the Columbine High School shootings in 1999.
Key words being good female vocalist. Annette is average at best. She's not horrible, but she is not that good either. Tarja has her beat hands down in that category. She always did add a little something special. Nightwish is still good because Tuomas writes the music, but the fact is with a better vocalist it would be better.

Annette certainly has a different sound, but I agree with Jon. The real heart of Nightwish is Tuomas. The composer is responsible for so much more of the style of the band than the vocalist. Just compare any artist from any genre to another artist of the same genre. Changing your singer does not make you a new band.
Coming to Austin 10/10/12 for US leg of World Tour. Can buy pre-sale tickets thru Nightwish website link now. I am old, but this is a bucket-lister for me.
Annette's range has improved with Imaginaerium. The thing is, it's Tuomas's composition that gives Nightwish its unique sound; you could plug in any good female vocalist and, just going by the instrumentals, you could say, Yeah, that sounds like Nightwish. Great talent, great band.
It's Debut. Nightwish is a very good band. A very good band. In fact, one of the best orchestral metal bands out there.
jakamabubu
they are going by debue album, and sence lacuna coil was out first they put nightwish after them
brokenanguissette
Hey, Pandora, Nightwish came first >.> They didn't follow in Lacuna Coil's foot steps. Angels Fall First came out a full year before Lacuna Coil was doing anything. You've got it all turned around.
1twiztedpixie - I disagree. there both good. but Annette can't hit the same pitchs as Tarja. but ther eis no need in argueing in who is better as they are both great singers.

If you want the old Nightwish back, I suggest tuning in to the new Xandria...the new album, with new singer, sounds just like old Nightwish... I'm with the minority here, I love Nightwish MORE with Annette!
11 hoolander, Tarja made NW more rock like, more metal rock. she does sing great with without them. But i want to hear Annette sing with Tarja to hear their differences in their voices.
@willow - what about 34 year old computer nerds who like to slug beer and beef jerky and also enjoy riding mountain bikes? Can we listen to Nightwish too? Pretty please? BTW Over the hills and far away is my jam!!!
I don't care what happend in the past, Nightwish will always be awesome. I love listening to the old albums. I think Nightiwsh is and will always be my favorite band.
would you believe I discovered this band on a Celtic Woman album some years ago, and just one day decided to buy a nightwish album to see what they were about? XD
ok is it me or.. during the entire 3min on.. could have been used in the movie Fifth Element.. The opera singer.. I know it was not Tarja but damn wouldn't that be hot!
It's funny how some people claim Tarja was Nightwish, when the sole creative power behind the band was Tuomas. He is the reasoning we can even have a discussion about Nightwish.
I like Nightwish when it had Tarja. I LOVE Nightwish now that it has Anette and I would never go back!!! Can't wait for the next album to come out!!

ya all need to be quiet...this s**t is on fire

@Tom - not gonna happen. There was a LOT of bad blood when she left the band/was fired. Some of it came across into Anette's first album ('Bye bye Beautiful!' specifically). Tarja needed NW FAR more than NW needs Tarja.
