Nikolay Myaskovsky (1881-1950) was a Russian composer whose music was shaped by the Bolshevik revolution and years under Stalinist rule. Myaskovsky became a professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory in 1921 and held other important appointments in the Soviet musical hierarchy, yet he was as vulnerable to criticism for "formalist tendencies" as his contemporaries, Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Myaskovsky wrote a Cello Concerto, a Violin Concerto, 27 symphonies, 13 string quartets, and many other works, in a style that was modern yet tonal.
