Noel Pointer

Violinist Noel Pointer studied classical violin before he signed with Blue Note as a jazz musician in the early '70s. His releases of light instrumental pop and fusion also included guest stints by vocalists. Pointer moved to United Artists in 1978, and his Hold On LP had Patti Austin as the featured singer. He later included contributions from the Jones Girls and Patrice Rushen on future releases for UA, and then moved to Liberty in 1981. Pointer recorded with Norman Connors and did sessions for several other artists. He resurfaced in 1993 on a Shanachie date, Never Lose Your Heart, which would prove to be his final album; he died from a stroke on December 19, 1994 at the age of 39. ~ Ron Wynn

The Noel Pointer Foundation (NPF) was incorporated in 1995 under the direction of Ms. Chinita Pointer, wife of the late Grammy nominated jazz violinist Noel Pointer. In 1998, the Noel Pointer Foundation created a string music education program for 18 students at Public School 44. Fulfilling an incredible need, they were soon asked to do the same for many other schools.

When I really got into Jazz, Mr. Pointer took me on my first ride into my inner self. He was part of my ever growing collection that I still have to this day(Vinyl Record). Noel Signed My Phantazia album from the passenger seat of the Grand Marshals car durning Hampton University's Homcoming Parade as he passed my apartment complex. I heard he was the Grand Marshal so I stood along the parade route hoping to get a glance and he possibly signing my album(very long shot). He wasn't in a converta

for some people if you did not know your artist you could mistake pointer for ponty on some songs. if they could have come together for an album they could have been called the p & p connection, they're great musicians.

when I first heard Noel Pointer in the early 70's Jazz/Funk violin was not very common. I saw to young men on 8th St. in the Village (NYC) playing like Noel and realized what a pioneer he was.

We often comment on how music touches the soul; with Noel Pointer, he not only touchs the soul, but gently massages it with a unique combination of passion, love and comfort.

I got an opportunity to see him back in the very early 80's. A small venue in Buffalo, New York (Tralfamador e ) I got to also exchange a few words with him. I adored his Fantasia album. He was a great musician and easy on the eyes too!! Would also like to see a longer bio on this artist. As I understand it, he was a child prodigy? Thanks.

It is a shame that this talented musician's stay 'here' with us was short lived to a sudden stroke at age 40. It is good to know his music is still loved even though he's in his rest.
