O.A.R.

O.A.R. (an acronym for the band's full moniker, Of a Revolution) transformed itself from an independent college band to a Billboard chart-topper over the course of a long, varied career. First, two of the band's demo recordings were hawked on university campuses. Then, news spread about the band's roots rock and reggae-inflected songs, which owed much to the jam band genre. Before long, O.A.R.'s website had turned into a highly trafficked internet destination, and the group gradually left the college scene for the bright lights of national stardom.

Formed in 1996 in Rockville, Maryland, O.A.R. coalesced around lead singer/rhythm guitarist Marc Roberge, lead guitarist Richard On, saxophonist Jerry DePizzo, bassist Benj Gershman, and drummer Chris Culos. Roberge had known Culos since childhood; he also played in local bands with On and Gershman. DePizzo, who hailed from Youngstown, OH, met the other Maryland natives at Ohio State, and the band made its studio debut with the release of an independent demo, 1997's The Wanderer. Many of the songs on O.A.R.'s debut disc were written while Roberge and Culos were living in Israel, and the album was recorded on a shoestring budget in Culos' basement.

Two years later, the switch from student band to headlining act began with the arrival of an intensely popular song, "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker," which became a hit on college campuses. The group toured the college circuit as a result, booking shows between classes and encouraging fans to tape each show, which helped spread O.A.R.'s music to a wider audience. O.A.R. then went into the recording studio for a second independent demo, 1999's Souls Aflame, which helped the band land a distribution deal with Alternative Distribution Alliance. By the time Risen appeared in 2001, O.A.R. had earned enough buzz to hire producer John Alagia for the album, which went on to sell 60,000 copies without a major label.

Roberge began writing songs for a new CD later that year. To appease its dedicated fan base, the group issued a popular live album, 2002's Any Time Now, and signed a major-label deal with Lava/Atlantic for the release of 2003's In Between Now and Then. Additional tour dates provided enough material for a second live album, 34th & 8th, and the band began climbing the Billboard charts with 2005's Stories of a Stranger, a studio album that contained a pair of Top 20 Hot AC hits in "Love and Memories" and "Heard the World." A third live offering, the CD/DVD set Live from Madison Square Garden, appeared in 2007. O.A.R.'s slickest album yet, All Sides, followed in 2008, and the four-disc live set Rain or Shine appeared one year later. Both were quite popular, with All Sides peaking at number 13 on the Billboard charts. Looking to repeat that feat, O.A.R. swung for the fences again with 2011's King, which found the band reuniting with All Sides' producer, Matt Wallace. ~ Robert Hicks, Rovi

O.A.R. needs to make money with their craft. They aren't going to do that by recording jams from 10 years ago. Going mainstream is the coolest thing that can happen to any band from this genre. I just hope people that fall in love with them now go and buy the whole catalog and say wow, they were so raw, and jammed, love to see how they came along And yes, if you go see them live, they are even better than a decade ago. Better musicianship and the same great passion.
Turn the car around...
Nice album
If anyone thinks O.A.R. has sold out, go see them live. Their studio albums are much different now, mostly because they have more money behind the production. They are, by far, the greatest band live, and still bring it hard every single night. And they still jam out to their older stuff in concert. They played Ladanday the last time I saw them a month ago. Don't hate success.
Nice!
my son got me hook on them :)
Saw them my first day of class at WVU back in '05... been hooked since
underwood_jt
O.A.R. is still one of my favorite bands, but I only listen to their old stuff which is their best. They really did sellout...th e y need to make another album that goes with The Wander.
I put The Band, The Grateful Dead, My Morning Jacket, Neil Young, Dave Matthews Band, and Little Feat on my pandora yet this keeps popping up?!?! They don't sound like any of those bands! They sound more like a watered down coldplay...
just started listening to pandora at work and these guys keep on showing up. WOW...love them!!!!

i remember listening to shattered on the radio while on the way to my sisters choir concert and it was a really rainy grey day....thats why i like ths song. reminds me of greyness and rain :) not th choir concert though that didnt do so hot no offense to my sis heehee

nothin' but love for these guys!!! :)

Whenever someone calls a band sellouts it just means that that individual wishes time would stand still and let them live in the past. People change and evolve. Bands, too.
ajared2002
If you think their sell outs why do you listen? If it bugs you that much just stick to your 8-traks and stay offline, as every band in today's society sells out to some extreme.
ok crazyinakilt so they let their music suffer because they wanted a private jet. Does that make them any less sell outs???
Its easy for us to all sit here and criticize people as sellouts. Remember this though, these people have bills too. They have things in their life that they want to do that take money.
aaronpaul323
I agree, the college bands or alternative rock seems to start with their own flavor. Just look at the Chili Peppers. Their old stuff had the alternative punk feel. The new stuff, with exception of Adventures of Rainman, seem to have lost the classic feel of the band.
polsters12
I think they have become a little too main-stream. They have re-recorded some of their classics and destroyed them trying to fit in the top 40 pop genre. I'm tired of the easy listing, meaningless lyric tracks they have put out lately.
all i'm sayin is i would love to see them say f**k you to the record companies and do things the old way
huge fan of o.a.r., being from maryland i must say they've played some really great shows at Merriweather . But with that said i feel the band, as they grow more popular, are becoming to mainstream. Whether it be label influence or true artistic change(which i doubt) i for one dig there older stuff more than say their last 3 albums. Even at their concerts they play the old classics that true fans love more than their recent hit singles like shattered and this town, which get occasional radio p
Diggin' the new album. Heaven is def the catchiest. I loved the video too!
They're new song "Heaven" is pretty sweet.

I love their album All Sides.. and the song Shattered... Stories of a Stranger is a great album also!

Good S**t,,,,,ver y very good s**t!!!!!!!

oar best band ever
@Jim/Dan thx, why take the time to go to the band page and comment on how much you hate them, i mean, really? @ jessica/adam , Hit the thumbs down and get on with life, i am sure there are better things to do then go on pandora and make comments about how bad a band is.If you do like it then comment, if not, kind of what like jim said, don't spread hate.
mrsweld
I for one prefer to enjoy music that takes me away from the negativity of the world and people that only have negative things to say. If they don't like the music, turn the station and go away. Well said JM!!!!
iskidooitt
Jim/Dan, Here! Here! Agreed! Too much hate everwhere, why here too? No one said that you have to like every band, give it a thumb one way or another and move on, done!
iskidooitt
OK, I am an OAR addict. A break through, at least I am admitting it now! Been listen to these guys for a couple years now and they still get me! If you aren't happy after a listen, then there is no hope for you!
For those asking, disliking two songsby the same band bans it from that station. But really? Keep ya trolling on youtube, not on pandora haha and the fact that you would ban U2, White Stripes, and this band surprises me that it would even bring this band up on one of your stations... But go Jim and Dan! I agree with you guys totally.
Dan, it's because some people would rather be miserable and try to entice others to be the same way. I for one prefer to enjoy music that takes me away from the negativity of the world and people that only have negative things to say. If they don't like the music, turn the station and go away.
Interesting that people would rather type 200 letters to describe their dislike than hit 1 fast foward button on their media player. If you don't think they're any good... keep it to yourself. Surprising that you'd listen to DMB or Dispatch and not like these guys. But, I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions. Just a shame you think hating on the internet solves anything.
I dont really like this band. Is there anyway to keep them from playing altogether?
man, i'm sorry that your musical taste sucks...you' l l never know what you're missing :(
this band blows. pandora needs a "ban band across all stations" button for them, the White Stripes, and U2
