The Ocean Blue

Hershey, Pennsylvania alternative pop band the Ocean Blue were formed in 1987 by singer/guitarist David Schelzel, keyboardist Steve Lau, and bassist Bobby Mittan, longtime schoolmates who shared an affection for college radio favorites including U2, Echo & the Bunnymen, the Smiths, and R.E.M. With the addition of drummer Rob Minnig, the group signed to Sire the following year, issuing its self-titled 1989 debut within months of graduating high school; the record immediately found favor on alternative radio, notching the hits "Between Something and Nothing" and "Drifting, Falling."

The Ocean Blue's sophomore effort, Cerulean, appeared in 1991, continuing the atmospheric approach of its predecessor; the title track performed well on the modern rock charts, although the album didn't chart. Beneath the Rhythm and Sound surfaced two years later, with the video for "Sublime" becoming an MTV favorite. Released in 1994, the Peace and Light EP closed out the Ocean Blue's Sire contract, and was also Lau's final recording with the group -- he left to form his own label (Kinetic). Guitarist/keyboardist Oed Ronne was recruited for their 1996 Mercury debut See the Ocean Blue; 1999's Davy Jones' Locker appeared on the band's own Ocean Blue label prior to being reissued and distributed by March Records/What Are Records? in early 2001. This was followed by the six-song EP Waterworks in 2004. In 2013, the Ocean Blue returned with the full-length studio album Ultramarine. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

I saw them live once in Salt Lake - great concert.
Brilliant just brilliant
If I wanted to hear Echo & Bunnymen, I'd listen to Echo & Bunnymen. This is crap.
Ah....high school crushes, college heartbreak - like a journal of poetry found years later...
These guys are real namby-pambys . la la la la la la is what you write and sing when you can't make up enough lyrics to fill a whole song.
incredable talent..they have the rare ability to make memories
Great comments all... they are awesome..... s a w em' when they only did covers...
This band came along while I was finishing college, and those albums are still some of my favorites - great band!
Great Band. look forward to their new release on Korda Records. Still wish Rob & Steve would reconnect for (1) Reunion show , in the near future.:)
One of the best albums they put out was see The Ocean Blue and its not here what gives. Always have loved their sound.
Best American Brit Pop Band Ever! Top 5 All time bands prob top 2 a close 2nd behind Smiths.
Pretty cool and positive music; I love the melodies !
I saw them a couple times including a New Year's Eve Party at the Chameleon Club in Lancaster. They also did a quick tour with the Mighty Lemon Drops which was fun. I was in college when their first CD came out and remember playing each of their first three CDs in my shuffler

They really are top notch
I love these guys still. They are so creative. Everything about their music, rythems, lyrics, harmonies, insrumentals are so crafted so well. I could never be bored by them
Saw them with the Mighty Lemon Drops in '89 at Mississippi nights in St. Louis. TOC blew the Drops off the floor. They played their entire album and then threw Hershey chocolates to the crowd. Brilliant show.
love their music..

Ocean Blue! Remember seeing them live after waiting for years for tour. Ran back stage behind drummer, after set. but later got kicked out after a scuffle with bouncer at the St Andrews Hall in Detroit! Good news... MET the band before altercation. Left behind three friends to party with the band while I went down the street to get a CONEY DOG!!. Ocean Blue hands down one of the top alternative band of the 80's!! Makes my top 20 Alternative bands of the 80's. - - - D E T R O I T - - R O C K S !
I still love this song. It makes me cry. it reminds me of myself. I listen and think wow this is EXACTLY how I feel. Then I get to move forward because I expressed something through the listening of a song! Remarkable. I love The Ocean Blue a lot for this!
Love these guys! Saw them way back in 89 with the Smithereens at the Candy Store in Ft Lauderdale! I agree with Jon, radio never play good music thus the end of Ocean Blue
Almost as good as The Smiths.
Excellent alternative pop band of the 90's, at least they were for me. The vocals, guitars, rhythm, and steady beat. These guys really make you feel like there is a place where not every freakin frakin thing has to be hard and in your face. Just tune in and chill back. ONE VERY BIG THING! Where is their super cool album 1993 "Beneath the rhythm & sound" is one of their best. The awesomely swayful "Listen It's gone" and dreamingly smooth "Listen it's gone" would a great addition to my Aztec Camer

THE OCEAN BLUE IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVS. I HAVE EVERYONE OF THEIR ALBUMS AND ALL ARE GREAT! A GUILTY PLEASURE DEFINITELY FOR AN OLD PUNKER/COLLE G E RADIO DUDE.
Where the heck is the rest of their catalog? TOB is one of the best American bands ever. Saw 'em live at the Troubadour a few years back and it was amazing seeing one of my favourite bands live. It was a real TRIP.
Ocean Blue...great songwriting mixed with catchy hooks and airy guitar riffs..mixed with great lead singer= a must listen too....RADIO SUCKS...for not supporting this Great Band!!!Cerul e a n and their debut cds are must owns.
I love the Ocean Blue, but I'm sure that David Schelzel has his hands full as a music business attorney with clients like Prince ;)
Hey bromide01, why is it lame to hand out cds to his/her friends? As long as he/she is not selling them to friends. Fan bases get built this way.
aowenby
Why don't they list "See" as a selected album ? It is by far their best...
bromide01
Good going. I'm glad you love this band so much that you hand out pirated CDs left and right to all your lame friends.
cinjohn18
Love, love, love them. I too wish they did not go away.
so underrated. just about everyone I burn one of their CDs for loves it. not sure why they were never that popular...
Yes, they opened for the Furs 1991 "World Outside" tour. Saw them in upstate, N.Y. I didn't even know who TOB was at the time, I didn't start liking them until a few years later! A good band who should have had greater commercial success, and who still exist on a very part-time "when they feel like it" basis.
Saw them open for the Psychidelic Furs in northern California around '91 or so. One of the best shows. The Ocean Blue was a perfect complement to the 'FURS'.
sdaouph
They should've acheived so much more fame for this amazing music.

"Drifting, Falling... watching all your dreams roll by..." I love the Ocean Blue and hope that they get a new release out in the very near future!
