Opeth

Brought together in Stockholm by guitarists Peter Lindgren and Mikael Åkerfeldt in 1990, Opeth added progressive influences and acoustic instrumentation to their brand of Swedish death metal. As the group progressed, it was very common for an Opeth live set to fly in several different musical directions -- and an average song lasted no less than ten minutes. Impressed by their originality, Candlelight Records released their debut full-length in 1995, which was titled Orchid, and featured a rhythm section of bassist Johan de Farfalla and drummer Anders Nordin. Edge of Sanity mastermind Dan Swano produced the band's ambitious second album Morningrise in 1996, after which they embarked on a brief tour with Morbid Angel. Century Media took notice and not only licensed Opeth's first two albums for the United States, but also planned on releasing their next album on both sides of the Atlantic. With the recruitment of bassist Martin Mendez and drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Amon Amarth) to replace the departed de Farfalla and Nordin, Opeth's third album, My Arms, Your Hearse, was released in 1998 to glowing reviews, establishing the band as a leading force in progressive metal with death roots.

Released in 1999, Still Life displayed even more of the band's prog rock influences, and the following year the band played its first U.S. concert at the Milwaukee Metalfest. Blackwater Park, titled after an obscure psychedelic prog outfit from the '70s, was released in early 2001. The album created a huge buzz among progressive metal fans, who had begun to lump the band in with other experimental metal bands like Tiamat. Instead of waiting until the buzz died down, the band released Deliverance in the fall of 2002. The following year, Opeth surprised fans with the release of Damnation, an album that was almost completely devoid of any heavy metal trappings and focused instead on acoustic instruments and traditional songwriting. Ghost Reveries arrived in 2005 and proved to be a return to form for the band. Opeth returned in 2007 with Roundhouse Tapes: Opeth Live, and in 2008 with the all-new studio album Watershed. In 2010, the band followed up with another live album, In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. The set was recorded at the famous London venue and featured the band playing their break-out album, Blackwater Park, in its entirety. Opeth shifted stylistic gears dramatically for 2011's Heritage. While writing for the album, Åkerfeldt fell under the spell of the music of Swedish folk music, Alice Cooper, and many spaces between. The sound, while remaining Opeth's, is also quite different, far more prog than death metal. In fact, if anything, this is the sound of the band leaving death metal behind. The album's cover is loaded with symbolism depicting the change. Heritage was also the last Opeth recording to feature keyboardist Per Wiberg. The album was released in September on Roadrunner. ~ Mike DaRonco, Rovi

Just saw Opeth with Mastodon at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach. Was totally amazing, I had listened to Opeth before but never seen them live, definitely have to say they are way better live, I swore I was listening to the album version of the songs, totally love Mikael's voice, so diverse.
I have been going to shows and have been passionate about music ever since I was about 13 or 14. Hermans Hermits, Blues Magoos and the Who was the first concert I ever went to. My friends sister ws in love with Hermans Hermits and I wanted to see the Who. I have been thinking what great band or bands could I compare Opeth with and Pink Floyd was one band I thought of but Opeth is in a category all its own. They are such great musicians and song writers I can't even put into words how terrific th
Just seen them with Mastodon and Ghost... they were great as usual. ive seen them like 5 times. always a great show
Opeth are in my top 3 bands. Discovered them with Blackwater Park, and I love Heritage. One of the few bands that have been around for a long time and still continue to grow and surprise with each new album.
Opeth is the Pink Floyd of the modern generation, a great band of really skilled members, musical masters; able to switch from a quiet, contemplativ e song, to a song that has a lot of meaning and deals with tough issues. Mikael Akerfeldt is a great singer, and an all around great guy. (reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio in attitude, if not in voice.)
I think Heritage is great because it really shows that Opeth don't just stick to one kind of thing, which, for me, is the true mark of an artist. It's still Opeth, just without all the screaming. I still continue to enjoy everything they do.
simonj1980
I go through Opeth phases where i'll listen to nothing but them for like 2 months straight. You can really get lost in there music.
Opeth as iv'e known them for 15 yrs are done. guess bloodbath will have to do. hope this steve wilson Mikael Åkerfeldt project is all that is expected but heritage is going to collect dust on my shelf.
@simonj and daehoth: Hear hear! This band opened up DM for me. I was blown away by the beauty of the music's blend. Absolutely amazing.
I have this band Tattooed on my skin..... Nough said.....
simonj1980
The worst of their best still beats the best of the rest. I agree with that
i really love this band so relaxing
I absolutely love Opeth. As for abandoning Death Metal, I don't know if that is true. This isn't the first Opeth album to not hold true to DM. Opeth is progressive death metal, the progressive part is what gives them their quirk. I f**kin' love all of it. My least favorite being Ghost Reveries and that is simply because I didn't like the way they played in that one as much as all the other albums, that being said it is still amazing. The worst of the best still beats the best of the worst.
Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) produces for the band. All that ambience and keyboard bullshit = Steve. So yes, Porcupine Tree influenced Opeth, because their lead singer engineers their sound and was essentially a member of the band for 3 albums.

Id argue Ghost Reveries their best album, not my personal favorite, but the composition on the album is phenomenal. The obscure tuning playing a big role.
simonj1980
Ghost reveries a week effort Thats gotta be the dumbest thing I think I've heard in my entire life
Ghost Reveries is probably their weakest effort but then that wouldn't mean its a poor record!
most epic solo ever
gratest band ever every thing they do is asome fom morning rise to watershed

actually Megan if you watch some of the interviews with Mikael on Youtube he says plain as day that he loves Porcupine Tree and that they were a major influence on him. After hearing Porcupine Tree I was like dang Mikael really ripped their sound off quite a bit and I feel even more so now with the newest CD because he completely got rid of the death metal style vocals.
Doug, I suspect neither influenced the other, and it's just that they share common influences, such as Pink Floyd. If one did influence the other it could have just as easily been the other way around though, for one the bands didn't come into existence many years apart if I recall correctly.
I have been listening to opeth since 1998...they never cease to amaze me with the depth of their musical talent and songwriting ability. One of the best progressive death metal bands out there. Scar symmetry is great as well...but the Opeth/Enslav e d show in New york in oct. 2009 was one of the best shows i've seen live. Period. Small venue and totally worth the wait. Played alot off of blackwater as well as damnation and orchid. F**king amazing band.
I'd say Porcupine Tree was a HUGE influence! If you've never listened to them, then you're missing some great music.
I've been listening to Opeth since 2002, and I have always prepared myself for let down everytime I listen to a new record.... all that preparing for nothing.
Saw Opeth last night at the PRS experience and that was one bad a** show they put on. My first time seeing them live ever. They played some of the new stuff from their new album heritage. Cant wait to get the new cd! Amazing band and i just cant get enough of their music!

Influenced by ELP I would say
mmesko6
Lump you sound like a real smacked a**
Good for you for discovering Opeth. This band will change your life.

I just heard of this band yesterday and am now obsessed! they are unlike anything i have ever heard before.
I agree with Karlos G.
Their music is killer, but without Petr and Martin on guitar and Drums it's almost a different band.
Opeth is some of the best Hard Rock/Metal. They got heart and passion in their music
completely amazed me from the first time i heard them. no matter how many albums they release i will never feel that they are slacking, my favorite is ghost reveries, but i love everything from orchid to watershed and can't wait for the next
I have to agree with Karlos, they kinda peaked out with Deliverance/ D a m n a t i o n / B l a c k w a t e r Park. The other stuff is all great- just not as great.
I love this band but unfortunatel y the quality of their music has slowly deteriorated over the last few albums-espec i a l l y with Watershed. To be expected I suppose. Its difficult to maintain a high level of brilliance for so long. The departure of Martin Lopez and Peter Lindgren have really hurt. I felt that, while Akefeldt was obviously the main creative force, that Peter and Lopez were an integral part of the band and both added their own creativity.
Aside from the convergence of styles they employ to make some of the most innovative music I've ever heard, they also allow each piece, each composition room to breathe. Their music never feels rushed, taking just as much time as necessary to see the musical thought to it's conclusion. Other bands would trim much more to get as close as possible to that '3 minute single' range. Opeth is an example of epic music allowed to stretch out.
Mikael Åkerfeldt is a music making alien.
a complex band-sometim e s on the verge of getting boring and then akerfeldt turns into something interesting and innovative on a dime.amazing guitarist.
I was told that Isis often times opens for them.
They get two thumbs up from me!
I love this band, but as they mature it is becoming obvious that what makes them great is also starting to weigh them down. Akerfeldt is obviously quite intelligent and passionate about his family, and though his career with this band is quite satisfying, the realities of touring do not suit him. The expectations of the metal community are also somewhat bewildering, I'm sure. He's worked himself into a musical corner: he must continue to innovate, but the music must remain brutal. Tough gig!
who could really open for opeth anyway, no one really does what they do as perfect as they do it. i agree that tool is perfect in thier compositions as well but its a different style. i bet it was an awesome show in that church
Saw them play live... in a church! Akerfeldt found it ironic and commented upon it several times. They opened with Heir Apparent and closed with Lotus Eater... Then played Deliverence as an uncore. Didnt play demon of the fall, or much off blackwater. Though he did play leper affinity, which was epic. Awsome show. No opening band, all Opeth.
Great band, interesting music. Akerfeldt is a huge talent, and has recruited some top-notch people for the band. IMHO, Opeth is the No. 1 band performing today in any rock genre, although TOOL is just about the same in quality of music and talent of the performers. Both are essential listening!
I want to die in the woods to their music when I die.
nickphifer
Met the band, great guys, great music
the range of Mikaels voice is amazing.
The epitomy of "thinking mans metal" - The TOOL of Death Metal.
If you haven't been out to Opeth.com lately; go there. They have a link to a free download from their new live album and also a link to see the Dirge For November live video. They are Awesome!
Opeth is one of the best metal bands of today their alot better then the so called "metal" bands we got today Opeth 4 life
Blackwater Park is the BEST Song and Album I think I have ever heard. I got hooked on Opeth through a Demon Hunter station on Pandora. They are the most sophisticate d band I have ever heard.
