Claude Debussy

August 22, 1862 - March 25, 1918
born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, composed during the Modern period
The principal figurehead of French Impressionism -- a term he disliked -- Claude Debussy (1862-1918) changed the language of European music through works such as his symphonic poems Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), La mer (1905), the opera Pelléas et Mélisande (1903) and piano sets such as Images (1907). "Clair de lune" from Suite bergamasque (1890) remains his most famous work, yet his sense of harmonic color -- inspired by Indonesian and Russian music -- helped to usher in the modern era. Intensely competitive and sometimes unkind to those around him, Debussy's personal life was often tragic, and ultimately short. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi

He still amazes me---in spite of listening to him for years...this piece still nearly brings tears to my eyes, it's that perfect.

This amazing work of art was also in Twilight.

Such a lovely piece. This is one of my favorite work from Claude Debussy!

Wasn't this beautiful song on the Notebook?
Debussy is one of my favorite romantics- up there with Tchaikovsky; even though there temperaments are so radically divergent from each other. The Timbre of their works has such feeling and movement; even though they emphasize symmetric harmony unlike the moderns, who gravitate toward A-symmetric abstraction and post impressionis t compositions . I would like to be able to link this to Facebook and twitter. How come Pandora does not have those scripts integrated into its program yet?
I love this. <3

Clair de lune!!
such a beautiful melody
loved it since the first time i heard it. this melody seems to tell a story in my mind and in my heart.

For such a revolutionar y composer, with multiple influences this is a lousy profile. Surely we could do better than for Bobby Darin?
I just love Claire de Lune so much. <3
my favorite Clair de lune

Childrens Corner really is a great selection. Its interesting how he incorporates the soul of the toy he focuses on...
More into jazz..... However classical calms my inner self.....the r e is palace for everything!
Clair de Lune and Prelude are overplayed. I am transported when I hear Arabesque for Piano No 1
@myerspercus s i o n : I, too, am really disappointed with the bio here. For someone so significant to the history of Western music, this just doesn't do justice at all. On a personal note, creating a station around Debussy's work really reinforced to me how much I love his music. If anyone's interested in learning more about Debussy and others, there is a very approachable book by Jan Swafford entitled, The Vintage Guide to Classical Music.

#1 in E Major = Star Hustler! Miss that dude.
Wait, never mind.... Just saw it... False alarm, folks...
Why do they NOT have La Mer on here?!?!? That is like the most amazing Debussy song ever!

Learning how to play. I am only 13
A beautiful piece
Just love this song. Would like to known the name of this piece.

Clair de lune is bliss
I was introduced to Debussy in a college music appreciation class. The instructor played Afternoon of a Faun. I sat there stunned by it's stark beauty & overwhelmed with emotion. A new world of music was at my feet. I went out and bought every Debussy record I could find, also Ravel. As a jazz musician, this type of music appeals to me much more than earlier classical forms, due to it's etherial quality & more complex harmonies.

my favorite of all time!!!
Brevity and just listening are the soul of admiration and appriation. DMB

Shame on Pandora for giving Debussy 7 lines of copy in his bio. This genius deserves far more.. and we deserve to know more about him. I'll bet Elvis takes up two pages. What a shame.
I prefer the Frenchman and the Tiger by Claude Bauls.
Claire de lune all time favorite. Also very difficult to play. In awe
my uncle can play clair de lune
jojo4eons
I love all of his works! They played this twice on my station! I love the 2nd as much as I love the 1st!
So Peaceful!
And oh my goshsky! Pandora's playing WC's Clair de Lune and
Satie! I think I'm going to blow a gasket! Yes God, I hear it !!! Have you got a little Ted Nugent? DMB
Just look at the beauty and genious we'd have lost if Se'rgio & Asso hadn't put the time, talent and energy into the ability to channel WC(I know, I know); and any other of these masters of music that keep genious alive and available. A societies most valuable beings are its artists. Yes! DMB
Hey gang! If you like Segovia, and I've always uber loved him, go check out John Zorn and Ottman Liebert. Their Flamingo, composition and style is to die for. I'd never hurd of them and swerved into them today and shazam!!! I hope they gave up their day jobs cuz I'm hooked. You'll thank me ladder...or you can thank me now. DMB
