The Outlaws

Southern rock unit the Outlaws were formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1972 by singers/guitarists Hughie Thomasson and Henry Paul, bassist Frank O'Keefe, and drummer Monte Yoho. With the 1973 addition of guitarist Billy Jones, the lineup was complete, and after a year of intense touring the band became the first act signed to Arista under Clive Davis; the Outlaws' self-titled 1975 album spotlighted their Eagles-influenced harmonies and Allman Brothers-like guitar attack, yielding the Top 40 hit "There Goes Another Love Song."

In the wake of 1977's Bill Szymczyk-produced Hurry Sundown, both Paul and O'Keefe exited, with guitarist Freddie Salem, bassist Harvey Dalton Arnold, and second drummer David Dix signing on for the 1978 concert set Bring It Back Alive and the studio effort Playin' to Win. The lineup shuffles continued when Arnold announced his departure following 1979's In the Eye of the Storm, with bassist Rick Cua recruited for the next year's Ghost Riders in the Sky, which netted a Top 40 entry with its title track, a rendition of the Vaughn Monroe favorite. Yoho left to rejoin Henry Paul soon after, and with the subsequent exit of Jones, only Thomasson remained from the original Outlaws roster -- not surprisingly, the group disbanded upon completing 1982's Los Hombres Malo.

A year later Thomasson and Paul formed a new Outlaws lineup, adding guitarist Chris Hicks, bassist Barry Borden, and drummer Jeff Howell; after issuing 1986's Soldiers of Fortune, Paul again quit the band, with the remaining quartet returning in 1993 with Hittin' the Road. While Paul resurfaced in 1994 in the chart-topping contemporary country band BlackHawk, Thomasson later toured with the re-formed Lynyrd Skynyrd while continuing to lead the Outlaws, releasing So Low in 2000.

Sadly, Jones and O'Keefe died within three weeks of one another in early 1995. In 2005, original members Thomasson, Paul, Yoho, and David Dix reunited as the Outlaws, rounding out the lineup with three members of BlackHawk, guitarist Chris Anderson, bassist Randy Threet, and keyboardist Dave Robbins. Paul and Robbins departed a year later to concentrate again on BlackHawk, while Thomasson, the only original member of the Outlaws to make it through all of the band's configurations, kept things going, reportedly finishing a new studio album, Once an Outlaw, before his death from a heart attack in 2007. ~ Jason Ankeny & Steve Leggett, Rovi

Henry Paul was also in the Henry Paul Band between Outlaws and Blackhawk stints. The Henry Paul Band's third album really sucked, other than that I have loved everything!

Sad to say, The Outlaws died after Lady in Waiting.
@ Frank Campbell, Dave Hunter Seabreeze Hr class 78. Yup, Greg and Duane went to Seabreeze Sr High in 64-66 I think. My dad owned a radio station in Daytona (WDAT) and when the station played an Allman Bros song Mrs. Allman would call the station and say that she was owed money!! LOL. Long live the Seabreeze Sandcrabs!! and Southern music, The Florida Guitar Army, not to shabby.... DsH Vegas

I attended Unv. of South Fla. in the early 70's and they were a regular playing on the hill when they first started. Great, great band. Even the Hill is gone now. Buldozed in the name of progress. Love the Outlaws.
Always loved those guitars smokin' sound especially on Green grass and high tides forever. One of my early memorable erections. Least we forget the girl in the jeep. God bless the south and it's music and it's women.
Such beautiful Music! I guess I really am gonna be nothing more than a long haired Southern Country Boy huh. Fine by me BTW!!
Love'm.
Thank You Jason Ankeny! Now THAT'S a bio, not a review. Very well done. The Outlaws have certainly created a legacy in music that will live forever in my opinion.

srfchsr: I was at the Day on the Green #5 also and had the same reaction. Frampton was on top of the world then and didn't stand a chance. I left shortly after he started his part of the show. If I remember correctly (I was 19) Frampton came out and sat on the front of the stage and went solo acoustic to open .....are you kidding?!... after what we just saw and heard. Felt sorry for him, he was and is an excellent guitarist.
Seen them last Saturday (3/31/12) at Chesters Harley Davidson for Arizona Bike Week. They play with serious pride for their music and their fans, Awesome!
There will never be another Hughie Thomason, Henrys doing a good job carrying on, andBilly Crane is a good player, but Hughie, was extrordinary , I really miss him, got to meet him on my birthday, what a great experience, Thanx for a lifetime of music and memories
This is the most love song when when to butte falls high (1982) ore. It just keeps cruzing along.... still love it!!!!!
Henry Paul and Monte Yoho have re-formed the band. I saw them in Carefree Arizona in early December 2011. My Daughter took me for my birthday! They cranked!! It was a small venue and they were just amazing. Then they hung out with the croud afterwards and signed autographs and t-shirts. They are supposedly putting together another studio album, and did 4 songs from it at the concert. They were great and I will definitely buy that album when they get it out!!
If you are a fan, go see them now.
You just do not here this type of music anymore....
The guitar army one of the best concerts I ever saw in Miami when they did Bringem Back Alive.

First saw the Outlaws in a small club in Winter Park,Fl. autumn of '73 when Billy Jones first joined the band. Thought then these guys are going big. Four years later, Day on the Green #5, July4th 1977, Oakland Colosseum they opened the show followed by Santana and then Lynyrd Skynyrd and finally Peter Frampton as the headliner. Poor Frampton didn't have nearly what it took to follow those three guitar super groups and most of the crowd went home. Good times man, good times!!
First saw them on a 3 bill nite........ O u t l a w s , Tucker & Skynyrd!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
was outlaws freak in scranton, pa saw them 13 times with all rosters. also was at asbury park show with commander cody warmin up. In binghamto ny with Molly Hatchet and 38 special.
