Paul Hindemith (1895-1963), one of the most important composers of the first half of the twentieth century, was also significant as a theorist, educator, and performer. In the 1920s, Hindemith was at the forefront of German composers who rejected Romanticism and embraced an iconoclastic eclecticism, but he later developed a distinctive harmonic and melodic language, tonal but not triadic, to which he adhered for the rest of his career. Remarkably prodigious, he composed extensively in every genre. Among his best-known works are Symphonic Metamorphoses, sonatas for virtually every orchestral instrument, the opera Mathis der Maler, and the symphony derived from it. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
