Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay Were laid spread out before me, as her body once did All five horizons revolved around her soul, as the earth to the sun Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Best song by Pearl Jam in my opinion. Great searing lyrics by Eddie, what emotion of a love lost. This is the song that nailed me as a fan even though Evenflow pulled me in.
One of my favorites of all time, so dark and powerful.

I don't think there's another song that speaks to me quite like "Black". Still my favorite song of all time!

What a great song....me and my brothers used to play pool in our basement and listen to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, AIC, Pumpkins, and STP....fond memories.
Despite having gone to high school in the 90's, I did not appreciate Pearl Jam until recently, with credit given to this song and Better Man. Truly a band that will stand the test of time.
This song takes me back to 1992, back to slam-dunking a basketball, back to beautiful girlfriends, and one of my coaches telling us "if you want to know what a girl is going to look like in 20 years - look at her mother" - HA!!! - very true, Coach - QUITE true!!!
I am such a bad brother... my older brother had this album when we were young, he pissed me off, so i broke it in half. I feel so bad about it today. Such a great cd.
pearl jam is the first band i started listening to and this song is one of my all time favorite's even to this day. seriously they don't make music like they use to.
the lyrics- the music- the emotion- no song has matched this- that i have seen- and ive seen them all- alanis morrisette comes closest- but the darkness- is unsurpassed- and it isnt an evil darkness- but an indescribeable emotional black hole- did it reach depression?- i dont know- but deep it is

Absolutely one of the most beautiful and emotionally moving songs of my generation...the energy and intimacy is why Pearl Jam is still around...Ten was the best album...after this one, they just didn't have the intensity and energy...
I love Pearl Jam, and I love this song..... All the love gone bad, turned my world to black....... I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in someone elses sky, but why, WHY can't it be, can't it be mine???????

Saw them at ACL Fest last year and watched the Austin City Limits show on PBS last month after I rediscovered this song. I looove Pearl Jam, they've always been authentic and Vedder is a true artist. One of the best bands to come out of the 1990's.
