I love quite a variety of music, from highly emotional late romantic symphonic and choral works to breezy, lyrical pop ballads, from classy baroque pieces to impressionistic gems, from neo-romantic symphonic and choral works (John Rutter) to video game music, from funky, up-tempo 70's and 80's tunes to romantic philly soul, from naturesque, peaceful new age to folksy celtic tunes, and from brassy, heroic movie scores/fanfares/marches to lush, sweeping, often understated romantic movie themes. However, my favorite composers are in the film and classical genres, namely (top four in no particular order), Sir Edward Elgar, John Williams, J.S. Bach, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. I also love the music for the 1990 version of Jane Eyre (by Franco Zefferelli). I do have a growing love of pop songwriters/composers like Burt Bacharach, and pop artists like the Carpenters and Christopher Cross. LDS Composers like K. Newell Dayley, Roger Hoffman, Michael McLean, and Jon Schmidt are also some of my favorite composers.
I have, from an early age, made a connection between my personality (tending to be more sensitive, empathetic and introspective) and the music I write, listen to, and play. I love music that has beautiful, singable melodies (lyrical and expressive music in general) with often very rich harmony and some chromaticism to quite a bit of chromaticism (dependant on the general mood). Some music I love is mainly diatonic/has less complex harmony. Highly rhythmic, exciting music is also fun to listen to and play, and offers many technical challenges which I (generally) welcome. Avant-Garde music is, dep. on the piece, sometimes a little interesting (the bizarre music that relates well to the darker emotions, fear, confusion, weirdness, anger, etc. is often quite appealing), but some modern music is tedious, pedantic, overly academic, and absolutely hideous. All in all, I'm a hopeless romantic, and that's pretty much the kind of young women I'm interested in dating.
