I enjoy melodic and meaningful music. The bands I like do have a pretty typically common sound in my opinion, many having acoustic guitar or just lots of big chords. It's no secret that I'm a pretty hardcore fan of rock, though I do love all music.
Here are just a few I like: 12 Stones, Alter Bridge, Blink 182, The Black Mages, Breaking Benjamin, Casting Crowns, Creed, David Cook, David Crowder Band, Foo Fighters, Goo Goo Dolls, Hillsong United, Jeremy Camp, Lifehouse, Nickelback, Paramore, Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, Seether, Sick Puppies, Staind, Tenacious D (the guitar is awesome), Third Day, Etc.
When I'm working I like to turn on Pandora and listen to New Age or Contemporary Classical music. I also do like the shredders like Buckethead and Joe Satch, though in moderation, thank you.
