I have always listened a bit left of the dial. Side projects, small venue road warriors, quirky noise-makers and the like have always held my interest.
I worked as a live sound technician in clubs and small venues for many years. As a result, I was exposed to more than a few fine musicians who played for the love of it. I may buy an album simply because I hear a song and the drummer surprises me with an innovative fill.
My favorites are artists playing music with strong lyrical quality. The best combine this with solid melodies to create interesting and memorable depictions of the human condition. It may be personal or it may consider society in a larger sense, but without something to say it is more disposable pop, regardless of the genre.
