An amateur musician myself, piano and trombone, I love almost any music that is outside the mainstream, especially employing odd meter or more complex structure and part-writing. My first big band "crush" in high school was Canadian trio Rush, and in college I got very into other progressive groups such as Yes, ELP, and Kansas. Some post-college faves are They Might Be Giants (very creative and humorous!) and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (especially early work with keyboards and harmonica by Howard Levy). I recently discovered Gentle Giant, about 30 years too late! I also like most jazz, especially piano-based, but not so much electronic fusion or too "environmental". Melody and harmony are still good by me.
