I was raised on 50s/60s Rock n' Roll; old country; blues; folk; Motown, etc. I did not know about then 'modern' FM radio until I was about 12 or 13 (born in 1965). My Dad had (and my family maintains possession of) one of the largest vinyl collections of original label, original recording/artist music anywhere under private ownership, with over 7,000 45 rpm records and almost 800 LPs. When we were in a vehicle, all I heard was AM 'hot wax' oldies or 8-track tapes. I brought records to music class and was laughed at by my peers, and applauded by my teacher. All of this helped form the underlying deep and meaningful appreciation I have for so many forms of music today.
My favorite musical group is, and has been for some time, The Cure. I believe Robert Smith is one of those incredibly underestimated musical geniuses, and the music that The Cure has created and delivered since the late 70's is, to me, some of the most emotive, thought-provoking and affective music in my life. While The Cure are my favorite group, my favorite genre is probably true heavy metal music, born on the backs of Iron Maiden; Judas Priest; Black Sabbath; Ronnie James Dio; Scorpions; Van Halen; old Metallica; old Motley Crue; Ozzy; Whitesnake; Bad Company; Great White; Rush; Anthrax; Suicidal Tendencies; Queensryche; Testament; Slayer; White Zombie; Pantera; Led Zeppelin; Deep Purple; Jimi Hendrix; AC/DC, etc. I love modern metal as well: Korn; Breaking Benjamin; Sepultura; Disturbed; Static X; Unearth; All that Remains; Sevendust; Slipknot; Tool; Ministry, etc. Heavy metal music incites and inspires my emotions, and reminds me that I made my own foray into the exploration of music, beginning with these and many other 'metal' bands.
I bow low to Alice In Chains, and am greatly saddened to know I have missed my chance to see/hear them live...at least in person. Lane Stayley was a talent of rare breed. I respect and admire a lot of 'Alternative/Grunge' music: Pearl Jam; Soundgarde
