I love everything from techno to country, from classic rock to hip hop. I think all music has a potential to be amazing. I value so many different instruments: piano, cello, saxophone, guitar, percussion; and when talented musicians get ahold of the ideal instrument the possibilities for brilliance are endless.
I think everyone can agree that an amazing song happens when the musicians use their originality and play to their strengths to make magic. I have a few more precise ideas as to the recipe of an outstanding song.
There are two different types of vocalists - those with beautiful voices like Christina Aguilera or Amy Lee from Evanescence, and those with original voices, that which some may view as odd or even distasteful, but that very quality makes their voice so listenable, such as Eminem or Ozzy Osbourne. And both types of vocalists are equally vital to the world of music.
As far as instruments go, I am a sucker for the way emotion behind guitar sounds when an artist allows it. I grant you that the guitarists of Dragonforce, Avenged Sevenfold, and Megadeth ooze talent from their fingertips, and any aspiring guitarist dreams of having that level of skill, but to me that music loses some heart. I love the wah and the slow and soulful notes that Eric Clapton hits in songs like White Room, I adore Carlos Santana - I think his take on butt-kicking spanish guitar is fantastic, I love the pshychedic and classic rock fuse of guitar by Steve Miller, Joe Walsh is as well a very cool dude, and I also tend to be partial to Mr. John Frusciante (and Michael Balzary, while I'm on the subject) of RHCP, as that band is so near to my soul (I think the solo from Hey is my favorite yet).
And finally - as I have learned from being a drummer - when music has a great beat then it really all comes together.
In summation! (& b/c of the opposing space restrictions), Pandora is great because I can listen to all of my favorites and discover some new names as well.
