I am a second generation musician from the neighborhood. Basically we provided a service so it was more functional than artistic at first. I found Pandora from Jaco Pastorius' website and the programming seems endless. Playing soul and funk growing up on sax I also liked the singer/songwriter like Curtis, Stevie etc. and learned bass due to what is essentially the rock & roll generation , amps and speakers had equity. Now that I look back the guitar players had a high overhead. A musician mentor once told me DJs have to own and update their equipment and at first thought they were too lazy to learn an instrument. Than he realized getting an instrument and taking lessons is actually cheaper! After playing bass in a gospel and jazz group at the same time and sax in a popular funk band, I went to college and got into fusion which led me to straight - ahead jazz for ear training. I tend to work in spurts so when unable to play due to other priorities I become a huge listener. In college 99% of what I did was math, science, tutor, starve and feed. Out of that came my best music student whom saw what it takes to play for life. But I knew he had what it took! Also I honor my mentors in all subjects none more important than music.
