Originally from OH and the North Coast, I grew up on folk and rock in the 70's and 80's. I went to Miami Univerisity in the mid-late 80's where WOXY the college station and one of the first alternative music stations in the country; unfortunately, at that stage in my life, I didn't *like* alternative rock. When I moved to Seattle in 1996, I started listening to Gothic/Industrial music, and re-appraised my opinions on alternative music.
I also love Celtic, jazz, World Music, a few country artists (generally those that do cross over to the pop charts)and lately have LOVED Zac Hacker (runner up in last season's Nashville Star), indie, and soundtracks. My favorite bands range from local to mega-international stars. I've been revisiting music from HS in the last few months, in the form of the Michael Stanley Band, one of the most sadly underrecognized bands of the 80's. I love Abney Park, which is a local Goth band in Seattle; Children of the Revolution, also a local Seattle world music band, and Molly Johnson, a fabulous jazz singer from Toronto. On the Celtic side, for traditional Celtic music I like Heather Alexander (again, local to Seattle), the Chieftains, and some bands that have influences but are pop like the Corrs and Cranberries. I also have a spot for 80's dark wave like Erasure, Depeche Mode, Berlin, etc.
Not really into urban (Hip Hop/Rap) in general, although of course I may find a song/artist or two that appeal to me.
If I'm in the mood to "rock out" nothing does it more for me than the rock, glam and hair bands of the 80's like Queen, Bon Jovi, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Poison, U2, Heart, etc. From the 90's I love Savage Garden, Lifehouse, Queensryche, Barenaked Ladies among others. For my mellow moods I like Josh Groban, Sarah Brightman, the Eagles, Loreena McKennitt, Enya, Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, Simon and Garfunkel, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Barbra Streisand and the like. I adore Billy Joel and Elton John just in general.
