Music that is POPULAR may have appeal to a wide range of individuals- including those with modest levels of artistic understanding. A pop (commercial) composition may have tremendous acclaim with one societal or regional group, but the luster may fade quickly. Popular music not only provides momentary diversion in our daily lives, but it generates income for the composer, concert promoters, performers, recording companies, advertising agencies, the media, and so on.
A composer of ART MUSIC, on the other hand, aspires to exhilarate the listener intellectually and emotionally. King George II of England once remarked to George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) that the composer had “entertained the entire kingdom.” “I do not wish to entertain them, milord,” Handel said boldly to his monarch, “I wish to make them better.”
