I'm a violinist with a largely hard-rock/metal based collection of CD's. I currently only focus on keeping up religiously with Rammstein, but I love buying music, and frequently buy a band's CD based on a friend recommendation or just because of a comparison to a band I like. That's how I've found some of my favorite stuff, i.e. As I Lay Dying and Bullet for my Valentine. I also have stuff from other genres, including stuff like Nickel Creek, Great Big Sea, Eric Clapton, and Weird Al.
