As a general rule: if a band is played on the radio in America, it isn't a very good band.
There are exceptions but usually the rule is completely correct. I can't stand rap and hip hop; they shouldn't even be considered music. Country I can actually sort of stand to listen to, but it isn't really good. I will at least respect the fact that they can play instruments and sing and write their own songs for the sake of the music instead of exploiting the fact they have a voice to fill their pocketbooks like all the pop culture idols. Bunch of self-centered, misguided, piggish bastards who couldn't even live in the real world for a few seconds without having a nervous breakdown.
You may be able to tell that I like metal from my stations. I also enjoy classical, some more mainstream rock, and some new age-ish stuff. It really depends on my mood. The songs I enjoy most need to have a gloomy or haunting sound to them. Like a somber hook piercing straight through you and grabbing your attention, forcing you to listen to the song. I also like playing my own music, especially on the piano or violin. But I also play guitar and bass. I would really like to record my own music in my own recording studio and I would play everything except drums. Ah, the dreams we can dream...
