In the 1950s, while in high school and college,I became a fan of musicians such as Stan Kenton, Chick Corea, Woody Herman, and George Shearing. This was at a time when the Big Rage was Elvis and the beginning of Rock'n Roll, which I never learned to appreciate.
I have a classical music background, having studied at Eastman School of Music, and since then played in a number of orchestras and tried my hand at composing. My tastes in classical music are eclectic and range from Brahms to Ravel and Debussy, from Hanson (what else do expect from an Eastman student!) to Shostakovich and Prokofieff and Rachmaninoff, and on to modernists like John Adams.
But for day-to-day entertainment, I keep Pandora strumming along. It's helped me discover a wealth of musicians that I'd never have run into, left to my own devices. Musicians like Jobin (Wave is fantastic), John McLaughlin (a fantastic guitarist and fascinating composer, as in "Thieves and Poets.") My latest discovery is David Sanchez and his amazing "Coral."
Let's keep beating at the government to not soak Pandora and other streaming radios with steep fees, putting them out of business!!
