I am a fan of thru-composed music, with demanding instrumentation and complex structure. Ludwig van Beethoven, Tool, The Mars Volta, and Zao are examples of this. I value originality in music; if it's been done before, it has probably been done better. Also, bands I like must have talented vocals, if vocals are used. I like punk's attitude, but generally don't like the actual music for this reason.
The music I like tends to tell stories. The songs on Francis the Mute by The Mars Volta and The Funeral of God by Zao are albums that exemplify this. On that note, I want lyrics that make me think; I enjoy the mental stimulation provided by good poetry, and I like to spend time thinking about what the artist really means in their songs.
My favorite Meta-genre is rock, but I also really love jazz and symphonic orchestration.
Mainly, I like music that is highly talented.
