Despite the fact that I am a 90's kid and had a sister a good eight years my senior, I grew up listening almost exclusively to the Oldies. You see, my mother believed that in order to appreciate new music, you have to know its roots and the story behind them. That and she would not play anything else in the house or car at the time anyway; so, no matter what, I had to listen to it all the time. I fell in love with Simon and Garfunkle, the Mamas and Papas, a number of the old do-wop groups, Johnny Rivers, Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as Marvin Gaye, The Chi-Lites, The Temptations, The Four Tops, etc. The very first song to ever get me away from listening to Oldies was, of all things, "Walking After You" by the Foo Fighters. I was a huge X-Phile at the time and saw the video for it while randomly flipping channels. So, I bought the soundtrack for The X-Files Movie, and eventually wound up buying The Colour and the Shape. From there, I started listening to everything. Alternative, rap, hip-hop, R&B, classical, techno, trance, trip-hop, shoegaze, Brit-pop, Indian pop, Japanese rock, Korean rap, German punk and metal, Irish punk and folk, indie bands and mainstream alike. About the only genre that drives me a little crazy is country music; however, I think that has more to do with its generally conservative nature than anything else. If anyone has any bands or songs that they can suggest, I'm all ears and will gladly listen. I want to expand my love for music in as many directions as possible.
