Music for me begins with the odd, 1980's alternative scene when "alternative" was really what the music was; an alternative to the mainstream. Bands like The Cure and The Smiths, R.E.M. (pre-1990) were enjoyed by college students on low-band radio stations around campus. I love 1990's "new" alternative as well, but will always seperate the two because really, new alternative is completely different. One thing that has always made music enjoyable for me was the abstract lyrics of my fav bands, but also the ability to connect to the song and artist. That is missing today for me in most of what I hear on the radio.
