My music listening really began as a little girl growing up in Marin City in the late 50s early 60s. On Sundays we heard Mahalia Jackson records and other "church singers". But on Saturday nights, it was Sam Cooke ("Little Red Rooster") and Jimmy McCracklin and other earlier R& B records. But it was the Supremes in 1961 and the British invasion a few years later that opened the door to serious and devoted radio listening. My music from early on was "Crossover" by virtue of the multicultural blend of my community. I loved my Temptations, Four Tops, Mary Wells, Supremes, Marvalettes, et. al. And that music appreciation extended itself to musicals (a great place to hear fresh new classics cheaply at the movies: My Fair Lady, The King and I, Singin in the Rain, An American in Paris, and more), and classical music that my mother listened to on her one day off as a domestic for white families) and the British invasioon boys as well as our stateside Beach Boys, Dylan, Sam the Sham and the Pharoah, and the other great guy groups that were emerging. My music is also aligned with signifigant social and cultural shifts in this country and it defines important shifts in my personal growth and development. Pandora allows me to reconnect with so much that I miss and music I didn't know I had forgotten.
