After a friend was given "Yessongs" for his birthday in, what, 1974(?), I got pretty much hooked on Yes, and that was my cornerstone band throughout high school and into my early adulthood. Yes brought me to ELP, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, King Crimson, etc.
Early adulthood and a Santa Barbara City College music appreciation class started my exploration of classical music. A close personal friendship with jazz bassist Chris Symer brought me to an appreciation for artists like Joey DeFrancesco, Flim and the BB's, the Yellowjackets, and of course Symer's band, Headless Household. A relationship with a country music lover, followed by two years in Austin got me into roots country music and rockabilly (I was at the Continental Club for the live recording of Dave Alvin's "Interstate City"), and I was lucky enough to have seen Junior Brown, the Derailers, Stop the Truck, Asleep at the Wheel, and blues artists Stephanie Bradley and Alan Haynes perform while living in Austin.
Now in my mid-forties, I'm waxing nostalgic for the music of Yes again, and Pandora radio stations built around Yes music have brought me to The Flower Kings, Camel, Genesis (Peter Gabriel era), UK, etc.
