Bio:
The first live concert I attended was at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., where I caught the Ramsey Lewis Trio in their "Hang On Ramsey" days (1966?).
Since then I've had the pleasure of alot of live music from The Seldom Scene at the Red Fox Inn to Doc Watson at a little Masonic hall in the San Fernando Valley of California. Somewhere in between I managed to catch Pink Floyd at Hampton Roads, Virginia, the Alman Brothers, Alison Krause, Sam Bush, Danny O'Keefe (at the Cellar Door), Willie Nelson, Tammy Winette, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, John Prine,...the list just goes on and on.
The thing is, like food, if you put it on my plate there's not very much, very often, you'll see me spit out. I like damn near all of it.
I must confess I wish I had paid more attention in my classical music appreciation classes back in school instead of trying to be cool. I listen to a lot of classical music these days too, but feel pretty ignorant.
I can only tell you that the classical music I enjoy the most has got to have a violin, a piano, or a cello in it. If it happens to have all three, I'm smilin'.
I've tried (and failed) to play music all my life. Hawiian steel guitar, flat-top guitar, recorder, violin, piano, coronet, bass guitar. (do bongos count?)
I currently call myself a "recovering mandolin player", though the truth is, I never got the hang of that one either.
The one thing I have learned in trying all the different instruments I've tried is that I can play a radio acceptably well.

Oh, and never refer to a classical violin as a fiddle. Very uncool.
