I come from a musical family, play many instruments and just love music.
Favorite bands/artists include Soundgarden, Smiths, Jimmy Eat World, Pink, Everclear, Blink 182, and Prince.
Of the modern pop artists, I really appreciate those who write their own songs (Pink, Avril Lavigne, and just about every modern rock band / rock artist). It's hard for me to listen to manufactured music where the performer is not involved with the writing process. On the other hand, when Kara DioGuardi writes a song, she seems to be able to convey her intentions to the performers.
