I like melodies with emotion and energy. I don't like to listen to a song, listening to the good drum, guitar, etc. parts in the intro, then be thrown off my feet by some person screaming without melody or vocality. I want the vocals and the music to blend and mix. The music should have as much meaning as the lyrics. That's why I like TooL, Lacuna Coil, and Alanis MOrrisette. These groups may seem very different, but, at their core, they pay homage to the spirits of pure music.
