For me, all or most of the elements of the music must be afire. The rhythmic dimension must syncopate; the harmonic must transcend simple predictable diatonics; the timbral dimension must be as rich as having good acoustic instruments playing in the room; the melodic, too, must burn by leaving the predictable path in some way. I despise formulaic "music." Formulaic music is better called "product," and belongs on the same shelf as processed cheese and spam.
