born in Brighton, Melbourne, Australia, composed during the Modern period
Percy Grainger (1882-1961) was a tireless teacher and composer remembered for his arrangements of music for countless combinations of instruments, most notably for band. His aim was to make music a democratic art, accessible to all. At first, he earned a living as a concert and recording pianist, then gradually moved more into education. Grainger was one of the first ethnomusicologists to collect and record folk music, and his arrangements frequently try to capture non-melodic or non-harmonic aspects of the original. Grainger, although he became an American citizen, was central to the development of Australian music as distinct from other Western music. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi

I'm a clarinetist and first experienced Grainger through his works for wind band. After researching his life and knowing how he was primarily known as a pianist, you can really begin to hear just how well Grainger understood the capabilities of the piano and the technical skill that he must've possessed.
Thanks, Pandora!
