Periphery started in 2005 as the recording project of guitarist and producer Misha Mansoor. Mansoor, who had made a name for himself in the progressive metal community through his production abilities with his project, Bulb, created the band as an evolution of his earlier works, taking the music out of the studio and onto the road, fleshing out the band with a lineup that includes guitarists Alex Bois and Jake Bowen, bassist Tom Murphy, drummer Matt Halpern, and, after running through a few vocalists, singer Spencer Sotelo. With a sound that pushes at the boundaries of progressive metal, Periphery are at the forefront of the djent movement, utilizing detuned, extended range instruments to create a sound thats as technically dizzying as it is heavy, joining in with the growing ranks of bands that are taking the framework laid down by bands like Meshuggah and running wild with it. Periphery released their self-titled debut in 2010 on Sumerian, then quickly went out on the road, touring the U.S. and Canada, as well as making stops in Australia and the U.K. The following year, the band released their first EP, Icarus. ~ Gregory Heaney, Rovi
Yea dudes spencer for sure is not using auto tune at lol, they just have 2 recording of him singin overlappin eachother, at slightly diff pitches lol, guitars do it all the time...same concept
Haha miss may I if u like this band? Wtf? Number 1 I went to school with the vocalist. True story rise signed them and would not pay for their record so they're parents paid for it!!!! OMG miss may I is sooooooo terrible and 2 outta 5 are complete tools that think they're R the coolest thing out
Sorry to everyone saying he doesn't use autotune. He does. Just a little bit to smooth things out just like anything now a days. Btw I saw them live 3 times. He's solid until he tries to go high... Yea. The wonders of a good studio.
I've seen Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, Deftones, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Mars Volta, Messhugah... I think you get the point. I can not wait to see these guys live =>
I've seen this band live, and spencer is just as good live as he is on CD, so you can take your autotune BS out the door thanks. This band is f**king amazing.

Its called over laying the voice. Sounds like auto tune. But just recorded the vocals 2 times and over layed them together
you can hear autotune when it's used it puts a digital sound on the vocals which isn't present. we had used it when in the studio....it's not on his vocals
It doesn't matter if he uses autotune or not, u don't hear n e body else singin that good, n not only that but I've seen them live, he don't use autotune.

I would love the band, except the vocalist uses autotune and won't own up to it. The guitar work is great.
Guess what I'm doing in approximately 12 hours? I'M F**KING WATCHING PERIPHERY AT THE SUMMER SLAUGHTER TOUR!!! Just thought I'd show the fanboy side of me while Announcing how awesome Periphery is xD
If you asked Periphery what kind of music they play I guarantee they wouldn't label themselves Djent, or anything for that matter. Screw all these tags metal magazines and critics put on music. It is what it is.
a dood on mackinaw island turned me on to this. pretty f**king decent s**t. i enjoy this and the prog style but my ,main stay is meshuggah but this fits perfect into my shuffle on my ipod
The word djent is an onomatopoeia for the distinctive high-gain, distorted palm-muted guitar sound employed by Meshuggah..........THANX WIKIPEDIA. . Never heard palm muted or high gain guitars till Mesuggah came around. LMAO
Amazing. Love the vocals. Adore the music. I think AAL would be terrible with a vocalist because the music is so complex, but periphery sounds perfect with vocals. Their instrumental demos are pretty awesome though.
