Pete Droge

Singer/songwriter Pete Droge's career was helped immeasurably by his friendship with Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. McCready helped Droge secure a deal with American Records to release his 1994 debut, Necktie Second. Droge is a rootsy rocker in the vein of Tom Petty and John Mellencamp, with the occasional introspective ballad. On the strength of the tongue-in-cheek single "If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)," Necktie Second became an AAA hit. Find a Door followed in 1996, but it had a hard time finding an audience, partially because American Records was faltering financially at the time. During 1997, he wrote his third album and severed ties with American, moving to the Epic subsidiary 57 Records. Like his two previous records, his first album for the label, Spacey and Shakin, was produced by Brendan O'Brien. Droge took over production duties for 2003's Skywatching. It was followed in 2006 by Under the Waves. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

This is on my favorite all things albums along with Darkness on the Edge of Town and Steve Van Zandts "Men Without Women". Pete is extremely underrated.

Saw Pete open for Tom on 95 tour and at the Fillmore in 1997. He is an outstanding songwriter and shines in concert.
I saw Pete perform back in the mid 90's. He was great live. His lead guitarist, Peter Stroud went on to play for Sheryl Crow.

I have followed Pete around now since 1994 and in my book he's better than Tom Petty! He's a great singer and songwriter. Listen to more than one song and you will be hooked too!

I've been a fan since he released the title track to the movie Beautiful Girls in 1996. Early stuff can sound a lot like Tom Petty. Definitely one of those artists who I thought would become a bigger commercial success than he has. That doesn't take aything away from his music though. Still very solid.
Pete Droge is simple-but-d e l i b e r a t e and that's a compliment. Droge is comfortable tossing rock n'roll stanzas (not quite cliches) out over very tasty guitar riffs, curious chord changes, crisp drumming and (sometimes) tender notions. More than just pleasant company, Pete Droge grows on me.
Weird... Kind of old school... just different I guess... Not my favorite.
