This song was inspired by a psycological study back in the 60's by Stanley Milgram in which voluteers were told to inflict increasingly higher levels of electrical shocks to "victims" (actually actors) for answering questions wrong. Almost all of the subjects obeyed without question the orders to increase the shock, despite the convincing (but fake) screams of pain from the victims. Only a couple of people refused, the majority (the "37") obeyed.
