Peter Murphy

Despite having a successful solo career as a cult artist, vocalist Peter Murphy remains best known as the lead singer for Bauhaus, the pioneering post-punk goth rock band of the early '80s.

After disbanding Bauhaus in 1983, Murphy formed Dali's Car with former Japan member Mick Karn. Dali's Car only released one album, The Waking Hour, in 1984. Following its release, the duo broke up and Murphy hesitatingly began a solo career with a cover of Magazine's "The Light Pours Out of Me," which was featured on a 1985 Beggars Banquet compilation called The State of Things. In 1986, he released his first full-fledged solo album, Should the World Fail to Fall Apart, which featured a number of guest artists, including former Bauhaus member Daniel Ash. Two years later, Murphy released his second solo album, Love Hysteria. Like its predecessor, Love Hysteria received lukewarm reviews but sold well to his dedicated fan base.

With 1990's Deep, Murphy had a surprise hit -- the first single from the record, the Bowie-esque "Cuts You Up," became the American modern rock hit of the year, spending seven weeks at the top of the U.S. charts and crossing over to AOR radio and the pop charts, where it peaked at number 55. Following its success, Deep reached number 44 on the album charts. Murphy wasn't able to sustain that success with his next album, 1992's Holy Smoke, which only reached 108 on the charts, despite the number two modern rock hit "The Sweetest Drop."

In 1995, Murphy released Cascade, which was greeted with weak reviews. The album failed to chart in either America or Britain. While touring with a reunited Bauhaus in 1998, he recorded the solo EP Recall. The new millennium, however, saw a newly charged Murphy. Without a deal, he took to the road in support of the greatest-hits retrospective Wild Birds 1985-1995: The Best of the Beggars Banquet Years for two tours of the U.S. during spring and fall 2000. The latter tour, which was more acoustically based, showcased some new material and rare favorites. Still a cult mainstay with American fans, Murphy issued the live double-disc Alive Just for Love in summer 2001. This delightful set was released by Metropolis and featured Bauhaus tracks and solo hits. A year later, he hooked up with renowned world artist Mercan Dede for Dust, followed by Unshattered in 2004. His first collection of new solo material in seven years, the appropriately titled Ninth, dropped on June 7, 2011.

Murphy toured the U.S. and Europe in 2013 to celebrate 35 years of Bauhaus. That same year he narrowly avoided a jail term, being sentenced to three years' probation for a hit-and-run while driving under the influence and possession of methamphetamine. He didn't let the incident derail his career, however. His next studio album, Lion, recorded with Youth in the producer's chair, was released in June 2014. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Reminds me of my glory days.
.. And besides we're both cancer's..
Peter Murphy is not what you think! He is a magical being, looks like a prince out of a fairy tale@ He has a wondrous presence, has a great baritone.. And very purple and violet aura! Ageless and timeless.. Eternal!
Cuts You Up is such a jam. I love this guy's music - he really earned his gothic David Bowie comparison.
flylibra83
Wonderous voice and music !
Why he is not more recognised as a vocalist I have no idea.
going to see Peter live in KCMO on June 22
Peter Murphy is THE MAN. Forever. Enough said.
Cuts You Up is about the only Peter Murphy song I am familiar with, but it's a good one. Great lyrics and arrangement too.
Anyone who doubts Mr Murphy should be shunned I would stress in my opinion.. who are these loser posers denying the fact he is the master of eclecticism and in his current day he is still a magnificent voice and physical performance. .
How come Alive Just For Love is not on Pandora? That is a great album!
This is what I came back for after working 13 years and quit working for money that I have accomplished my dreams of making that money, have my love for 18 years and now I can delve again on this wonderful music again and again.
The reviewer does not give the man and his music any justice. Peter Murphy is amazing, and Cascade is breath-takin g !
Some musicians are very of their time and others are timeless...P e t e r Murphy's music will stand the test of time because it has a spirit and a joie de vivre that is lost on those who pass him off as a dystopic.
One of the most memesmerizin g artists ever he is a success hes awesome the bio makes it sound like hes failed but i love his music and his lyrics are so touchin really get ya thinking!!!!

i've seen peter live 3 times as a solo artist and once with the bauhaus reunion. he's mesmerizing live and such a gentleman. he graciously signed an autograph & briefly chatted with me. i've seen love and rockets and can say for a fact ash is an a** to his fans. at the bauhaus reunion, after the tour bus departed with the band on board, a fan in an electric wheel chair was trying to chase after the bus. the bus stopped, once the chair reached the front door peter got off the bus... i was mov
I really loved this music as a kid . I listened all the time but I must say that at the time I didnt understand the depressed kids who seemed to flock around this music at all . Im sure they could have said the same about me always wearing white t shirts and jeans and the depressed kids in their black .

What a nice surprise to hear the latest Peter Murphy album on Pandora! Still such a cool cat after all those years...

Life Long friend!!! Amazing Artist!!

Unbelievably powerful and profoundly moving...it is easy to see the power and intensity was with Peter as L&R was so much paler and weaker in comparison to Murphy's work and that of Bauhaus. Brilliant musician...
Ahhh...his majesty. Peter wears so many crowns for so many musical acheivements . He is one of the most innovative musicians of our time.
Bauhaus was good, but I feel Peter's solo work is far better. I have seen both love & rockets and Peter Murphy. Love & rockets were not very good. Peter hangs with better players now. His shows have always been great. Only my opinion.
Feh. Lucifers Lady doesn't know jack. Peter was just here in Tucson last night and he set the house on fire. I give plenty of props to Daniel Ash and David Jay, but without Murphy's deep, rich voice, they were really missing something. Like most great acts who fall apart, the parts never quite add up to the sum. Murphy lacks the songwriting brilliance that came out of Bauhaus; Ash and Jay sorely missed Murphy's voice and persona in their later efforts.
Peter Murphy was one of my fav artists back when I was younger And I still love that voice hope he makes another album some day
Peter Murphy pretty much so sucks. All you have to do is look towards Tones On Tail to Love & Rockets to see that the core of Bauhaus didn't need him. Sorry the truth always hurts.
Greatest voice next to David Bowie (who, if you look at the sky's gone out album... he looks an awful lot like back in the 80's)
I'd heard Bauhaus before, and never realized Peter was part of it (I didn't keep track of artists as much at that time). My first intro to him was with "Cuts you up." I liked it for the intriguing video, particularly the plugged in violin...had never seen anything like that. I had Deep when it came out, and liked much of that album. Interesting lyrics, very poetic; that's a big draw for me, too.
Definetely need to add Edenbridge to this roster, one of his all time best songs, although not on Pandora for some reason.

I've seen God ....and his name is Peter Murphy.
Erm, not to sound snobby here but you can't compare Peter Murphy to Hootie and the Blowfish to Ryan Adams. It doesn't equate. That's like comparing sushi to baseball to para sailing. Different audience, different genre, different everything. Sorry, Justin De Rosa, you're way out left field but hey on the brighter side, you can keep your Hootie. I certainly won't fight you for them. More Peter Murphy for me!
I've followed Peter Murphy since the early 80's and he still stands alone in a pool of mediocre pop music. Although there have been a few standouts, no one has touched the somber/melan c h o l y heart strings that Peter Murphy hits. If you're looking for bubble gum, "let's hang out and have a beer" music, maybe Hootie is for you! It isn't for everyone, but some of his music is truly beautiful.
pomonurse
...to attend a concert, being in his presence-the r e are no words...
Hootie and the blowfish is way better than Ryan Adams and Peter Murphy combined!

PETER MURPHY is A vampire deadundead or s o m e t h i n g so good that just can't function `
Indigo Eyes - one of my favorite Murphy tunes. The 1998 version of it is pretty cool too.

Will we ever see something to match the dreaminess of 'Indigo Eyes' again? One can only hope. Maybe the food in Turkey is too spicy?
