Phil Keaggy

Phil Keaggy is an excellent all-around guitarist who has been a part of the CCM scene for over two decades. Born and raised in Ohio in a Catholic family of ten, Keaggy always loved music and spent hours listening to such singers as Johnny Ray and Elvis Presley. He began imitating the latter as young as age four. Keaggy was also exposed to other kinds of music and became well versed in classical. His first guitar was a late-'50s Gretsch Anniversary model; at age ten his father bought him a Sears Silvertone, and by the end of fifth grade, he was playing in front of his entire school. Three years later, Keaggy was playing professionally with the Squires. He and his longtime friend, drummer John Sferra, founded Glass Harp in the late '60s when he was in the eleventh grade. They soon became known as one of the most innovative power trios around, even though they were never together long enough to break through commercially. They had a contract with Decca, toured the country several times, and had a growing base of devoted fans, many of whom were knocked out by Keaggy's lightning-fast guitar riffs and experimental sounds. At their pinnacle, Glass Harp was opening for such major acts as Iron Butterfly, Yes, Traffic and Chicago.

It was a lot of fame to be heaped upon such young musicians, and it being the late '60s, Keaggy was exposed to and partook of his share of drugs. His life changed dramatically on February 14, 1970. While lying in a hotel room suffering from a bad LSD trip, his parents were involved in a head-on auto crash back in Ohio. His mother died soon afterward, and this spawned a crisis for Keaggy that led to his becoming a born-again Christian. In the early '70s, Keaggy took to testifying before bewildered Glass Harp listeners after their concerts.

He left Glass Harp in 1972 and the following year recorded his first solo album, What a Day. He then spent many years working with a Christian fellowship and married. Since then, Keaggy has released well over thirty albums earning critical acclaim for both his virtuosity on guitar and his songwriting, which ranges from the Beatlesque pop of Sunday's Child to more subtle intrumentals. He occasionally gets back together with the other members of Glass Harp for reunion concerts and continues to release solo projects including Roundabout in 2006. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

I'd have to agree with Keith below. Truly one of the Masters of the guitar. I've had the chance to see Phil in a guitar shop with about 20 other people before a concert. He picked up a $150 shop guitar off the rack, tuned it and proceeded to play for about 30 minutes while talking with the group. One of the guitar techs in the shop just stood with his mouth hanging open and said it was the most incredible thing he had heard in decades of working with guitars. Shine on Brother!!
I remember there was a story out that Clapton called him the best

Phil you have made your parents proud as well as your Father above.
Just researched this guy in youtube. One word, AMAZING!
Been a fan of phils for 30 years. I seen him in Grand Rapids years ago and would love to see him at Redrocks-wha t a day that would be!

Lots of great music in the post Beatles decades. None better than Phil's, recorded or live. Huge variety of styles like the Beatles, very innovative as well. Top that of that his life and music are drenched with humility and God s love. What could be better?
An excellent all-around guitarist? I say the best all-around guitarist, period!

Not only is His music amazing but his heart as well. When my husband was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor, his friends were somehow able to contact Phil about my husband's condition and now much Bobby loved his music. Phil contacted my husband and prayed for him and went encouraging notes as he fought this horrible disease. When my husband went home to be with Jesus we played Phil's amazing rendition Here comes the Sun...in tribute to Bobbys love and Phil's heart of the love for music and

Phil Keaggy has a voice that sounds like Paul McCartney and is a much better guitar player than McCartney.
Just hearing this guy for the first time. I can't believe my radar never picked him up.
Phil's an amazing guitarist, but I wish Pandora would add more of his earlier non-acoustic stuff.

He's so talented- My dad introduced him to me and I've loved him ever since :)
I was given an album of Phils in 1995 which i still have. I think all his Acoustic Guitar work is truely amazing.
The album, How the West Was One had a major impact on my life. Phil's rock and Annie Herring and Matthew Ward's powerful harmonies gave my something that was totally lacking in the entire music scene for me: Christian Rock. I've seen Phil quite a few times in concert, and was fortunate enough to see the Second Chapter of Acts once and Matthew Ward once. I love them all. Bottom line, Phil is one of the greatest guitarists living today.
Wow, I know Keaggy for his CCM pop stuff, but he shreds on an acoustic guitar.
An excellent all-around guitarist? Please Pandora...th a t doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of Phil Keaggys guitar prowess!!
I saw Phil. With the then Phil Keaggy band. In Seattle Washington at the paramount theater in 1977. It was one of their last concerts together. As they had families and other projects.

It was the most amazing concert I ever saw.

Ted Nuggent even asked Phil to show him how he played some of his riffs.

A blessed and talented artist.

thats seven fingers and two thumbs
Hmmmm. Bobonnit, you obviously have not listened to much Phil Keaggy. He is a virtuoso guitarist. I do not necessarily enjoy much of his music but the playing is masterful. I also do not like Frank Zappa's music, but I acknowledge his skill.
Playing fast and noisy doesn't mean you are a great musician
happyhollywh i t e
They forgot to mention that he does all the virtuoso guitar-playi n g with only nine fingers!

I think the bio needs to be updated... he's been around for a LOT longer than 2 decades. It's more like over 4 decades!

love Phil !! Takes me to heaven!!

He came and played at HeavenFest here in Loveland, CO a couple years ago. I was suprised that they didn't give him a mainstage or that there weren't many people listening to him. They were busy listening to the other big name Christian artists. Oh well. It gave me front row seating to hear him. And he is AWESOME!! The things he does with a guitar are amazing. He is truly anointed of God.

I saw him live on stage with the 2nd Chapter Of Acts in 1978 or 79. Truly Amazing. 2nd Chapter of Act was the greatest CCM band of all time. With Phil's addition, they only got better.

Been a fan since What A Day - nobody does it better than Phil!

I saw Keaggy perform solo in 2011 at a small venue. WOW! words can't even begin to describe how good he still is. Yuotube some of his recent live work - absolutely amazing.
Wow, Phil Keaggy... one of the first Christian rock stars I ever listened to. That was in 1981. I've met him, prayed for him, was influenced by him and a singer/songw r i t e r , and had the wonderful privilege of giving him an autographed copy of one of my studio projects back in 2005, thanking him for all he has meant to me personally. I love ya, brother Phil...
One of the best performances you will hear is on the 1970 Glass Harp studio album where Phil was and still is the key artist in the band. You will get alot more of his music played from later albums of Phil when he was solo--just make Glass Harp a station.
