I think its an awakening song about guys in a band coming to a somewhat strange crossroads, reaching a peak that was once sought after and maybe not quite sure what the next move or turning point will be. I'm sure you can derive some drug references if you choose, but I think it might be a message of sobriety, or some form of clarity, but lingers on the subject of uncertainty, which may be the only true certainty of life as we know it. We spend our youth making sacrifices and working toward co
Harsh lyrics contrasted with the soft musicality makes this smooth. That sax is like a glass of fine wine to be sipped at a fireside. Incredible song. Peace.
Besides the fact that this is off probably one of the ultimate albums of all times- I remember as a 14 year old boy having my first slow dance at a party to this song (the year the album came out). Boy, talk about dating myself. What a memory!
Concerning the 'short, sharp, shock' part in the song: Strange coincidence if nothing else, but on Nirvana's 'With the Lights Out' Disc 4 (the DVD) during the 'Love Buzz' performance in a record store, there is a clearly visible poster with some guy on it and it says, 'Short, Sharp, Shocked' on it. Anyone else notice this?
Well I mean, they're gonna kill ya, so like, if you give 'em a quick sh...short, sharp shock, they don't do it again. Dig it? I mean he got off light, 'cause I coulda given 'im a thrashin', I only hit him once. It's only the difference between right and wrong innit? I mean good manners don't cost nothing do they, eh?
yes the lyrics are bleeping amazing some of their best, this and Wish You were here have AMAZING lyrics. And it's a great song and highly creative.

I heard once that the instrumental version was recorded sans lyrics years before dark side. Something about riots at U.C.L.A. Lyrics were written and added to the Us and Them now so famous on Dark Side Of The Moon. For sure my second favorite song on Moon behind Time.
I woke up one night back in 1973, about 2am, and this was on the radio. What a sensation! Dark Side had just been released we were all getting our first listen. I lay there and listened while the station played the rest of the album in its entirety. What a great time for music and FM radio.
