A truly amazing protest song. Powerful lyrics, framed in music that conveys the heaviness of the theme, and then carries the listener along emotionally to a place where by the end you feel maybe we can change for the better.
Two totally different approaches to "progressive album oriented rock", but Pink Floyd and Yes are my two faves in this genre, and I can't really say which one I prefer more. I guess it just depends on the mood I am in at the moment.
What can you say David Gilmour is Guitar God! And yes he is a man that can stand upright as he walks the walk. He didn't turn away from the homeless problem plaguing England. He donated several of his estates and millions of his own money to address the problem.
I saw this tour twice. It was easily the most amazing concert ever.

David Gilmour practices his preaches. He didn't turn away from the homeless problem plaguing England. He donated several of his estates and millions of his own money to address the problem. Wow! Wouldn't it be cool to be a bum one day and living in a Pink Floyd mansion the next? Way to go Dave. We need more selfless rock stars like you.

My favorite PINK FLOYD !
sean.m.horton
On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
sean.m.horton
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?
Pink Floyds' greastest song ever! The live version is the only song that tops the studio version. I could listen to this song over and over again. Delicate Sound of Thunde (live)r and The Wall live are possible two of the best albums ever produced!!!!
Hey, pimeson59, easy friend...not so intense, take it easy there. Helping anyone is not the work of the Devil unless the works of the devil are indeed a result of the poor and downtrodden's stupidity, carelessness, and desire to go join him. Sometimes, it appears to me that people all over the world have spiritual values that are screwed up.
I really like this song because I am oppressed and disabled. And I know helping the poor and downtrodden is the will of God from the Bible. But I wonder is they imply that helping the unfortunte is the work of the devil? "On the wings of the night" seems to imply that. But America and its spiritual values are all screwed up!

IMO, I think this song would be a good way to end The Wall, and Roger singing in higher harmoney.
If only, right?
