Bliss - my first time listening to this. All of the contrasting parts were like excellent surprises. I was engaged for the duration of the almost 20 minutes. This group more than any other gives me hope.
I'm not the first to notice that apparently, haha.
"Yeah, the beginning of that bloody Phantom song is from "Echoes". *DAAAA-da-da-da-da-da*. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. It's the same time signature—it's 12/8—and it's the same structure and it's the same notes and it's the same everything. B**tard. It probably is actionable. It really is! But I think that life's too long to bother with suing Andrew f**king Lloyd Webber."<7> -Roger Waters, via wikipedia
I just realized... Pandora doesn't have the lyrics for this song. Why not? The lyrics are AWESOME! - Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air / and deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
Definitely one the best Floyd songs. This is really a turning point in their style, IMHO, when they leave the pure “space” rock and start to explore the human condition which ends up making them the quintessential prog rock band. I can’t believe that Pandora played the full version…awesome!
Classic, beyond mind-bending classic. Never gets old.
@Sandy Beard - if you do hear anything that feels like 'Phantom of the Opera', it would have been lifted from Echoes! (which pre-dates any musical version of Phantom by quite a few years)
I saw David Gilmour do this at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. It was breath-taking, bone-crushing and everything in between all at once and I will never forget the experience.
Boy, This brings back old memories, riding around on the backroads with Chris Cassity, listening to this song and "One of These Days"-I'm going to cut you into little pieces.WOW.
without a doubt, the very best song pink floyd ever made.

I recall reading somewhere that Echoes started out as bits and pieces of other songs/sounds that were laying around (think cutting room floor) and then assembled to get the basics that also went along with Richard Wright's one note (the echo at the beginning). Also, if I recall, the versions we hear now are not the original. I'm pretty sure the original version had Nick Mason's drums backwards (think instead of the snap and fade out, you'd hear the fade in and then the snap). In essence Nick had
GREAT song! I second what someone else said: watch the Live At Pompeii DVD. It is spectacular. I personally like the version of this song on there better (it's split into 2 parts and they begin and end the concert with it). Gilmour and Wright singing together is just really awesome. What an idea... go to some ruins in Pompeii and play a concert to *no one* - no fans at all. Awesome.
Pandora just played "shine on you crazy diamond pt 2" and then this (echos). Two of my absolute favorites! I'm in musical bliss right now. Nothing beats Floyd!
A haunting song... very unique. The middle sounds like whales conversing. I really enjoy this song because it is so different... I am all mellow after listening... nice work PF
In 1977 we made a Super8 film about a backpacking trip we took to South Peak. We happened to be listening to Echoes as we played the film back after developing, and it fit perfectly. Years later, I transferred the Super8 to VHS, using Echoes as the soundtrack, and eventually VHS to DVD. Hadn't watched it in several years, but just last night, I transferred the DVD to a .wmv format. Suddenly here is Echoes on Pandora today. Pink Floyd just does that.
Look at all the Similar Songs - lol - All David Gilmour! No one like Pink Floyd except its band members!

"If you really enjoy this tune you should check out live at Pompeii on DVD, it is amazing. True fans already know and have known about this flick for years, but for you rookies, it is a must see for any floyd fan. Peace out"
Been a Floydian for years...take heed watch the vid. it's awesome!

Ya know, this is my favorite Floyd album, bought it new in 1971, and over the years I have listened to it over and over. Now it has been a while since I heard Echoes........ damn this is great. This album proved them to be capable of so much; its just too many people didn't get it til Dark Side. Memories may be fuzzy due to "things" taken then, but the music remains awesome.
Who needs new-age pop when the good stuff is still alive and well? This band rocks! They opened up a whole new era of music, that nobody could replicate.
This album and song is the reason I now have a room full of analog sythesizers. 30 years of playing Floyd styled music. (I really dig 'The Valley' and 'Wish you were here' albums also.

Always a great pleasure to hear "Echoes." One of PF's best space rock tunes, imho.

I wish I would've lived in the '60s. Man, the music was groovy. I love love love love this song. It's so great :) And I wish more younger people would get into this music, because, woah man, it's insanely great :)

Those of us born in 60's and before are lucky enough to have grown up listening to music like this. Although much of it was driven by the use of halucinogens, it remains some of the most sophisticated and complex music of our time, probably never to be repeated. A different time, a different mind set.
