Named for a halloween costume based on an Edgar Allan Poe short story, Poe gained a contract with Atlantic during the boom of female singer/songwriters during the mid-'90s. Originally from New York City, she moved around frequently with her parents -- a director and an actress -- but returned to New York at the age of 16 when they divorced. Poe enrolled at Princeton, and played in a band during her time there. Signed to Atlantic in 1994, she recorded an album with several producers and co-writers and released Hello the following year. The single "Angry Johnny" pushed Hello into the album charts, and during 1996 Poe supported Lenny Kravitz with a band including guitarist Darius Adkins, drummer Dan Jones, bassist Toby Skard and cellist Cameron Stone and headlined several tours of her own. Five years after her critical debut, Poe returned with Haunted, an album rhythmically adjacent to her brother, Mark Z. Danielewski's novel House of Leaves. ~ John Bush, Rovi
been a poe fan since i heard angry johnny!!! when i bought her second album, it came with a survey asking if i would be willing to buy another album from 'this artist.' makes me sad. i think she was shut down. she would have done better if she had stayed underground... even the mad music fiends i know haven't heard of her.
Atlantic needs to be chastised, they held this extremely talented woman hostage. They didn't want to publish her but held her to a contract. Shame on you for preventing this artist from pursuing her passion. I love your work.

Such an amazing voice! So sad she isn't recording anymore- I heard it was due to conflicts over the name but who really knows. I love her guest vocals on Center of the Sun & Extraordinary Ways by Conjure One!!
Saw her twice, once opening for DM, and then a small event in LA just her and the cello player. She also sent me a poster autographed to me. Poe you Rock!!! Wish you would come out with new music.
I want to see it too! I was in middle school when I heard of POE so I'm really rooting for her! Can't wait! I've heard one of her songs in a commercial and last time I have been to her website she was collecting people's dreams... I can't wait to see what she does to them!

She had a long legal battle that kept her from releasing new music, I think it just ended last year. Anyone know where the Poe ball is?
I got to meet Poe in 1996. She was opening for 7 Mary Three and there were problems with power to the TLA in Philly. The show was cancelled and she came out pulled her bus around a corner street .Poe and her band played 5 or 6 acoustic songs and signed shirts for those of us who stayed before leaving. A memorable evening.
Her song "CONTROL" is the most empowering song that I've ever heard. When she yells at the end "Don't you mess with me!" at the end I get the shivers. I also love "Trigger Happy Jack" Poe is just great!!!!

My friend introduced me to 'Walk the Walk' and I have loved Poe ever since. Her music has gotten me through some terrible times, and been the soundtrack to some very happy ones. I hopehopehope she makes more music.
I use to hang with her and the ells. toured with them as a "groupie" a few times in 1997 on till around 2000. Fun playing with Poe and her band in SF, and around local cali areas. Brings me back a million moons ago! Good time being carefree!!!
My brother and I have been waiting for Poe to make a new album for the last 10 years and haven't seen anything new. Does anyone know if she really won't be putting out any more music? It's soul stirring for to listen to her. It brings back wonderful memories and helped me through the sad times and hurt feelings from bad relationships or loss of family. I'll never forget how extremely talented she is and wish her the best in everything she chooses to do. In case you read this: Poe you inspire.

I remember Poe being involved in a very messy legal battle with her label & was stuck in a gridlock with them. I think I heard that it got so bad that they refused to release anything she wrote and since she is locked into powerful contracts that she gave up making music all together to save some dignity. I saw a statement by her saying that she would never write music again. Quite a shame being that she is such an incredibly talented person. Her live shows looked like fun, too.
