Premiata Forneria Marconi

Italy's leading progressive rock outfit of the early '70s, PFM would have remained a purely Italian phenomenon had they not been signed to Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Manticore label. Their sound was more distinctly rooted in the pre-classical era than that of their Germanic counterparts. In addition to electric keyboards (synthesizers, etc.), they also relied on violin and flute (recorder, actually) as major components of their music. Their name, by the way, was short for Premiata Forneria Marconi, the name of the bakery that originally sponsored them. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

not a recorder, it's a flute. Did you really listen to them, Bruce?

storia di un minuto and per un amico , their first two albums, are their best. sung completely in italian and totally innovative and fabulously played! top notch. are they here for folks to discover?

Pay royalties? Everyone in the music industry would be suing everyone else.

Leave a comment…Dear cowniew, is very clear that your knowledge of progressive rock and music business in general is very narrow. There's a lot of good music out there around the world. Get out of the FM Station market dig beyond the Status Quo. Music is more than those groups you mentioned. For commercial reason lots of good musicians doesn't make it into the stardom, but that not necessarily means their music is not valuable or has its own originality.

Very talented musicians who I'm sure put on a great live show. But just think that if ELP, Genesis, and Yes had never existed I doubt that this band would have ever been heard out of Europe. Personally, I think that they should have to pay royalties for theft of artistic content. Now known as intellectual property. In fact ,I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't.

@Mr.French- I saw that show at Ebbets Field as well. I could almost touch the bass player, the room was so small. But what an incredible show they put on in that little room.

I also agree that "When the World Became the World" is my ultimate fav of the whole genre. The title is very descriptive of what I imagine when I close my eyes as I listen to it.

PFM is without doubt one of the most creatively and technically sophistocate d bands of their time. Photos of Ghosts is a superb album. One that is considerably better, however, is When the World Became the World. Absolutely fantastic. Chocolate Kings was PFMs effort to appeal to a broader non-European audience. Compared to PofG and World, it is a disappointme n t

love this track. PFM is tight, but I always thought the Italian prog/fusion band AREA was light years ahead of them in terms of technique, breadth of material, and their dip into the jazz/avant garde.

probably for me is the best group of progre in europe I Like it

Ya know, I wouldn't have liked this back in the late seventies when I first started listening to prog because it would have seemed too gratuitously progressive. But I like it now. Funny how time can change us. It is like a prog smorgasbord, I'm hearing Genesis, Caravan, Gentle Giant in there. Hey there Pete!

Prog rock was probably the most creative genre to come out of the epic era. These guys are quite good. I haven´t heard ¨Ghosts¨ yet, but I have heard this album. The diffference between ´76 and ´73 should be interesting. I think rock 1970 to ´74, especially the prog variant, was artistically golden.

just noticed these comments for the first time. unquestionab l y one of the finest prog groups to come out of europe. vocals remind me of gabriel in the early genesis yrs. and the kid on the elec violin is as good as they come. oh, btw, david b., the album you're referring to is a live endeavor that i highly recommend called pfm cook....

Saw PFM a couple of times back in the 70s in Denver (at a TINY club, ironically named Ebbets Field). They were just as excellent live as in studio. Photos of Ghosts is amazing; it's the best example of how these guys had a fondness for making abrupt changes in style when you least expected it. AMAZINGLY talented writers and players.

(and yes, the Italian versions of Photos of Ghosts and The World Became The World are better than the Pete Sinfield-pro d u c e d English releases)

Great stuff. I have the two vinyls pictured, plus one of my favorites, "The World Became the World" also released on Manticore, in 1974. PFM, (pure friggin' Magic), for sure.
I also have vinyl of their Jet Lag project with electra/asyl u m records from 1977. Not one of their best efforts, but a good listen.

PFM had a 45rpm single titled Celebration. I still have it somewhere, it may be a DJ copy.

Yes my brother, Gabriel Amato, was their bass player for a while. His solo album, Hand Shadows, is a remarkable work of musical genius. His guitar work is ridiculous. Contact me. I can put you in touch with him if you'd like to get a copy. Also you can try his website, AmatoMusic.c o m .

PFM bring back many memories for me- great music to get high to back in the good ole days. PFM's first 4 records are progressive rock greats. The one album missing from the above 3 mentioned is "The World Became The World", their second album, and probably their best.

PFM is always refreshing to hear and goes very well with the Barbera d'Alba I'm enjoying at the moment. Salud!

Check out Live in Japan. Even Ian Anderson says it's the best live album he ever heard!
I agree with vaughan.desi g n s , you can't beat the earliest of PFM's works. Also love the other great Italian groups vaughan.desi g n s mentioned.

Where are their first two albums - Storia Di Un Minuto and Per Un Amico from '72? Both are their best work and absolutely essential! I'd love to hear more great Italian prog on here like Le Orme, Celeste, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Locanda Delle Fate, etc.
