Amazing! I heard this on my Pandora Michael Hedges station. I'm so psyched to hear someone with such rhythm and musical energy. I'm going to have to find more of his stuff! Definitely going to check out his Acoustic Guitar album that evettebiz mentioned. I'm so sad that Michael Hedges has been gone all these years, but this is a wonderful new discovery!!!
Wikipedia has some interesting info about Preston Reed—http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston_Reed.
first album i heard by Preston Reed was Acoustic Guitar recorded in 1978. most likely he did not hear Michael Hedges first. a little reading up on this says that he did hear him later on, most lilkely they influenced each other. give Acoustic Guitar a listen, it's obvious that this was his own style even back then

Had to stop and check out this guy as I was sure it was Michael Hedges....awesome work but Michael is terribly, terribly missed!I like to think that maybe Preston was so inspired by Mr. Hedges and this is a tribute to him, maybe? There will never be another Michael!
Yet another Michael Hedges wantabe. P.S. The music for August Rush may have been performed by Kaki King but it was a Michael Hedgers tune. Seek out the real thing . Michael Hedges is without peers!
the Music for August Rush was done by Kaki King another accomplished Guitarist of this genre who is soo underrated. Please if you enjoy this style seek her out!
I have to thank the people who put together the music for August Rush soundtrack for getting this style on the screen and into my home. Big thanks to the Pandora group for hooking us to more talented musicians.
No Dobro for Mr. Reed - he's an acoustic guitar fingerpicker who applies basically his whole body in a fabulous way. For Dobro we must turn to the masters Jerry Douglas, Mike Auldridge, and Rob Ickes. There are many other, lesser players. What an instrument!

This is FANTASTIC ! ! Is this what's called DOBRE ?
Open Tuning means when the guitar is tuned to, basically, something *other* than the native E-A-D-G-B-E that guitar is normally tuned to. Drop D (tuning the low E down to D) is one such tuning, but there's plenty of other open tunings out there in use. Pierre Bensusan's publishing company (I think) is called DADGAD Music because he has a penchant for tuning to D-A-D-G-A-D. That's a fantastic open tuning, by the way.
Is open tuning when you tune the low E to an open D ?
Love this guys sound.

Marygrider's question: may sound kind of wild but here goes: Open tuning is very old. It was passed on to rock and folk primarily through the blues, but was used in renaissance and classical music as well. The guitar is actually 5000 years old; the open tunings most commonly used on the 6 string guitar come from the blues, bluegrass, and celtic music. In modern rock music, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton popularized open tuning. Neil Young used it on "Cinnamon Girl."
