I'm just some over-the-hill illustrator/graphic designer who loves House music and all it's myriad offshoots. Chief among them would be downtempo after hours house made famous by the likes of OM records and Naked Music with DJ's like Mark Farina, Miguel Miggs, Juluis Papp, and Jay-J. My favorite breakout DJ/producer of the latter half of the decade is Kaskade by far.
But it can't always be about a downtempo groove... I was a bouncer at a Phila club now called PURE and I had just finished my shift 3:30 Sunday morning. Instead of doing the smart thing and getting some sleep and preparing for a new job on Tuesday, I heeded the siren call of my boss and his friends and drove up the New Jersey turnpike as the sun came up. That Labor Day weekend in '03 I found myself in New York City 7'oclock Monday morning walking thru the doors of a ALEGRIA dance party. That was the first time I had heard DJ ABEL.I was blown away, transported back to the deep underground house experiences of my youth. And yes Abel and Tony Moran certainly invoked that deep house experience like no other...
Having said that, my all time favorite DJ's hands down is MASTERS @ WORK. I just can't get enough of their Latin house sound, they've kept me grooving for 20 years. Right behind them are Frankie Knuckles, Danny Teneglia, David Morales and Victor Calderone in no particular order. They're all awesome.
But I'm from Philly so I've got to show hometown love. I remember when King Britt was showing me the lastest vinyl at Tower Records on South Street. Now look at him! World renouned DJ/producer/remixologist! Josh Wink? Hands down THE Acid electronica master. DJ Dozia [who lives in my loft complex] as quietly as it's kept has remained a force in the Philly DJ scene. Jazzy Jeff is all about Hip Hop, but he can lay down a House track with the best of them. Still waiting for good friend DJ Loctgruv to truly break out, his tracks are the s**t!
