I fell in love with Jazz as a young girl, when radio stations in the Sixties had a certain time slot for Jazz, usually in the evening on Sat. or Sunday nights, and I was always sure to tune in, while my friends were listening to the usual R&B.
While living in Detroit, I grew up on the Motown sound and other R&B. But I was fascinated by the talent I heard on Jazz tunes. All kinds of instruments, coming together to make such beautiful sounds...Just music, without the words.
The music was the words. I was hooked, and in awe of the talent I heard.
The Sixties showcased so many of the greats.
LEE MORGAN on trumpet is my all-time favorite!
Genius and pure talent...major crush! When he passed away in 1972, I cried as if I knew him personally. I'd never have the chance to see or hear him in person. Check him out if you haven't already. Loving Gregory Porter now!
