I grew up in downtown Atlanta, and when I turned 16 and bought my first car, a 1970 VW Beetle. I would drive down to Courtland Street, pay 50cents to park, and walk under the Courtland Street bridge to Underground Atlanta. Down there in the dark, boozers, losers, and ladies of the night found their home.
And there in the darkness of the once forgotten "Underground Atlanta" I discovered the saloon music of Piano Red.
I used to slip in the front door of Muhlenbrink's Saloon, and stand over by the upright piano and watch Piano Red play. Though he was blind, he would greet me with "Hey Kid"...and I would reply, "hey! Red!"...."What'cha wanna hear?" "Elvis!", I'd say. He'd laugh...and keep on playing his boogie wooogie.
Red died of cancer in Atlanta in 1985 -- I miss you Red. God rest your soul, you were a good man.
