Some years ago I moved to Portland from my sleepy little state of Idaho. I wouldn't say that I was a naive man when I moved there in as much ready and open to growing. Before the move I worked in the outdoor industry guiding etc and spent much of my time immersed in mountain culture. When 9/11 happened I was already in the process of making a life move. At the time Portland felt like a good step because of its proximity to mountains with the great city life -- so I went there soon after a long summer climbing/road trip.
Soon after moving I learned about the Indie Rock culture, Red light second hand clothing and the particular dress styles of Portland culture. I discovered bands like The Afghan Whigs, Flaming Lips, Iron and Wine, Ani Difranco, The Sundays, Yo La Tango, The Weakerthans, Supper Sonic Soul Pimps! lol -- I did see them and it was a steller bar show. And, now I continue to seek those bands out that represent hip progressive sounds.
